28 – Arthur Morgan’s Supposed Death Unraveled Under Federal Review, and Claire Discovered Her Quiet Father Had Been Financing the Experiment From the Beginning

Claire did not believe Arthur Morgan could still be alive.

Not because this family had respected death certificates particularly well.

Because she had seen the body.

Or believed she had.

The boating accident happened when Claire was in college.

Her father’s body had been recovered two days later.

Water damage made viewing difficult.

The funeral home advised against opening the casket fully.

Claire remembered touching his cold hand.

His wedding ring.

The scar near his thumb.

Rebecca remembered less.

She had been working overseas and arrived hours before the funeral.

Bell asked about dental identification.

Claire said it had been confirmed.

He showed her the new report.

Dental records had been changed after the accident.

Not crudely.

Professionally.

The file used for identification belonged to Arthur Morgan.

But older dental X-rays found in a university insurance archive showed different work.

Rebecca stared.

“So whoever died had Dad’s ring, scar, and newer dental record.”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked toward Claire.

“That sounds planned.”

She knew.

She hated knowing.

Fingerprints provided the strongest evidence.

Arthur once held a federal contracting clearance because he managed finances for university research programs.

Those prints remained archived.

They did not match the dead man.

Claire whispered, “Who was buried?”

Unknown.

Bell was working on it.

The grave would likely need exhumation.

Claire felt physically ill.

Sophie reached for her mother’s hand.

“Mom.”

Claire sat.

“I’m okay.”

“You say that when you're not.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca paced near the window.

“If Dad lived, why disappear?”

Samuel looked uncomfortable.

Claire noticed.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You know something.”

Samuel sighed.

“Arthur despised me.”

“That does not narrow anything.”

“He believed scientists should never control their own funding.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Starting to like him.”

Samuel ignored that.

Arthur managed portions of Miriam’s research finances because she trusted him to recognize pressure from funders.

He began tracking Samuel’s expenditures too.

Not officially.

Miriam asked him.

Rebecca stared.

“Mom had Dad auditing you.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He found irregularities.”

Early purchases connected to unauthorized cell work.

Payments to Nathan.

Side agreements.

Storage units.

Samuel’s first steps outside approved research.

Arthur confronted him.

Samuel dismissed him.

Arthur began documenting everything.

Claire looked toward Bell.

“Where are those records?”

No known archive had surfaced.

Rebecca returned to the reciprocal-transfer order.

“Dad used Mom’s authentication environment.”

Bell nodded.

That suggested Arthur had active access to Miriam’s system.

But why would he order the infant cell exchange?

Samuel had a theory.

Not to experiment.

To interfere.

Claire turned.

“How would mixing their cells interfere?”

Rebecca understood.

“If Dad knew Samuel was treating Sophie and Nathan planned to treat Emily, he might have tried to create biological ambiguity.”

Dr. Shah frowned.

“Explain.”

Research depended on knowing which changes came from which intervention.

If two infants exchanged small cell populations, later outcomes would become harder to attribute cleanly.

Arthur may have deliberately contaminated the experimental design.

Daniel stared.

“He sabotaged the study.”

“Possibly.”

Sophie looked offended.

“By putting other people’s cells in me.”

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

“Which is still wrong.”

Claire nodded.

Motives did not restore consent.

Bell found a fragment in Miriam’s financial archive.

A message from Arthur to an unnamed recipient:

If Samuel insists on turning the child into a clean experiment, I will make sure no result can ever be clean.

Claire stared.

“Child.”

Sophie.

Arthur knew.

Before the intervention.

Her father knew someone planned to experiment on his granddaughter.

And instead of telling Claire, he chose sabotage.

Another adult deciding strategy mattered more than disclosure.

Claire felt betrayal deepen.

“Why didn't he call me?”

No one could answer.

Rebecca said quietly, “Maybe he thought Eric would tell Samuel.”

Eric looked up.

“I would not have.”

“Dad didn’t know that.”

Claire turned on her sister.

“Stop making excuses for him.”

Rebecca flinched.

Claire immediately regretted the tone.

Not the point.

“I’m sorry.”

“No. You're right.”

Their parents had built a family where secrecy masqueraded as protection long before Samuel arrived.

Maybe that was why Rebecca learned to hide.

Maybe why Claire learned to accept partial explanations.

Maybe why none of them recognized the pattern quickly enough.

Bell’s analysts traced Arthur’s financial history after his supposed death.

The task was difficult because the identity disappeared.

But the money did not.

Small trusts continued paying storage fees.

Property taxes.

Research insurance.

Legal retainers.

One recipient appeared repeatedly.

Thomas Hale.

The man who helped Rebecca escape.

Claire stared.

“Dad knew Thomas.”

Samuel frowned.

“That I did not know.”

Bell contacted Thomas.

Under questioning, he admitted the truth.

Arthur survived.

Thomas helped him disappear.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“Where is he?”

Thomas resisted.

Bell reminded him the case involved crimes against children and a current medical emergency.

Thomas finally agreed to speak directly with Claire.

He appeared on video from federal custody.

Claire had met him only once at the cottage.

Now she stared at the man who had known for years that her father was alive.

“You helped him fake his death.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because people were trying to kill him.”

“Who?”

“Not one person.”

Arthur had discovered that Miriam’s research attracted commercial attention long before NorthStar existed.

Private investors wanted access to hereditary cancer data.

Samuel wanted research freedom.

Nathan wanted treatments no regulator would approve.

Cross wanted a clinical network.

Arthur realized every group believed the science mattered enough to bend rules.

He began collecting evidence.

Someone tampered with his boat.

Arthur survived because he had stepped off minutes before an explosion.

Another man on the vessel died.

Claire went cold.

“The man we buried.”

Thomas nodded.

His name was Peter Langdon.

A contract investigator Arthur had hired.

The explosion damaged the body.

Arthur used the chaos to disappear.

“Why let us think he died?”

“He believed whoever tried to kill him would target you.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“They did anyway.”

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

Arthur adopted multiple identities and continued tracing the network from outside.

He helped Miriam quietly.

Then after Miriam’s death, he disappeared more completely.

“Is he alive now?”

Thomas hesitated.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

“Don't.”

Thomas answered.

“Yes.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Rebecca sat down hard.

Sophie whispered, “Another one.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Yep.”

Claire asked where Arthur was.

Thomas refused initially.

Then Bell intervened.

Arthur had no legal protection from questioning, particularly if he helped facilitate unauthorized procedures.

Thomas finally gave a location.

Not far.

A rural property in upstate New York.

Owned under the name Peter Morris.

Bell dispatched agents.

Claire wanted to go.

Dr. Shah would not let Sophie travel.

Sophie told Claire to leave anyway.

“You have Dad,” Claire said.

Daniel smiled.

“Correct.”

“You have Aunt Rebecca.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Eric.”

He lifted a hand.

“Maya and Lucas.”

Sophie continued counting.

“Emily.”

“You're collecting people now?”

“Yes.”

Claire kissed her forehead.

“I’ll come back.”

“Bring Grandpa Arthur.”

Claire almost said if he's really there.

She stopped.

No more conditional language.

No more hoping someone else had the answer.

Claire traveled with Bell and Rebecca.

The property was modest.

Old farmhouse.

Large barn.

No security gate.

No laboratory sign.

Agents surrounded it.

Bell knocked.

No response.

They entered.

The house was empty.

But not abandoned.

Fresh coffee.

A newspaper from that morning.

Medication bottles dated that week.

Rebecca touched a sweater hanging near the back door.

“Dad.”

Claire recognized it too.

Arthur always wore heavy cardigans even in warm rooms.

Bell’s team searched.

The barn appeared ordinary until an agent found a concealed stairwell.

Claire almost laughed.

“Basement lab?”

Bell gave her a grim look.

“Probably.”

It was not a laboratory.

It was an archive.

Paper files.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Recorded interviews.

Years of evidence.

Arthur had built the history nobody else kept honestly.

One wall contained photographs of Sophie from birth onward.

Claire stared.

Not secret surveillance images.

Copies of family photographs.

School pictures.

Soccer team photos.

A handwritten note under one:

TEN YEARS. STILL STABLE.

Another:

HEADACHES INCREASING. NEED DIRECT CONTACT.

Claire felt rage.

“He knew she was sick.”

Rebecca found another line.

ADRIAN BLOCKING ACCESS. WESTBROOK ACTIVE.

Arthur had known about the fake clinic.

He knew Sophie’s symptoms worsened.

Still, he did not contact Claire.

Claire slapped both hands against the table.

“Why?”

A voice behind them answered.

“Because every time I moved toward you, someone moved toward Sophie.”

Claire turned.

Arthur Morgan stood in the doorway.

Older.

Much thinner.

White hair.

But unmistakable.

Her father.

Alive.

Rebecca made a sound Claire had never heard from her.

Arthur looked at both daughters.

“Claire.”

She crossed the room.

For one second he opened his arms.

Claire punched him in the chest.

Not hard enough to injure.

Hard enough to make the point.

He stumbled.

Bell moved.

Claire raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

Arthur steadied himself.

“I deserved that.”

“Do not start with what you deserved.”

Rebecca remained frozen.

Arthur looked at her.

“Becca.”

She started crying.

Then walked forward and hit him too.

Arthur accepted it.

Claire almost laughed.

Instead she said, “You let us bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let Mom die thinking—”

“No.”

Claire stopped.

Arthur looked toward Miriam’s files.

“Your mother knew I was alive.”

Rebecca stared.

“What?”

Arthur and Miriam had remained in contact after his staged death.

Secretly.

He helped her move the blue archive.

He helped her document Samuel’s network.

He tried to identify who altered her final treatment.

Then Miriam became ill.

Arthur wanted to bring her to authorities.

She refused.

Claire felt another betrayal arriving.

“Why?”

Arthur looked at them.

“Because she had discovered Sophie had been selected.”

Claire went still.

“This was before Sophie was born.”

“Yes.”

Miriam knew Samuel was watching Eric.

She knew Claire and Eric were together.

She understood the genetic combination Samuel wanted.

Arthur wanted to warn Claire.

Miriam feared doing so would drive Eric back toward Samuel, or cause the network to relocate where they could no longer observe it.

Claire stared.

“So you both watched.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You watched me get pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“You watched Sophie be born.”

“Yes.”

“You knew what Samuel planned.”

“We knew some of it.”

“And instead of telling me, you played chess.”

Arthur looked destroyed.

“Yes.”

Claire stepped closer.

“My daughter was not a board.”

“I know.”

“No. You know now.”

Arthur nodded.

Claire wanted to hate him cleanly.

But the room made that impossible.

Every shelf contained evidence he gathered to expose the program.

Names of children.

Financial records.

Cross’s identities.

Adrian’s shell companies.

Warnings never sent.

Draft letters to Claire.

Dozens.

Rebecca picked one up.

It began:

Claire, I need you to take Sophie and leave Eric immediately.

Never mailed.

Another:

There are people watching the pediatric appointments.

Never mailed.

Another:

If anything happens to Sophie, it will be because I waited too long.

Claire closed her eyes.

“You knew.”

Arthur whispered, “Yes.”

“Why didn't you send one?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Sophie’s voice echoed in Claire’s memory.

Everybody says that.

Claire looked at him.

“Fear isn't permission either.”

“No.”

Arthur sat.

For the first time, the man who spent years manipulating events from the shadows seemed to stop defending strategy.

“I failed you.”

Claire stared.

“Yes.”

Rebecca asked whether Arthur ordered the reciprocal cell transfer between Sophie and Emily.

He nodded.

Samuel had already administered the vector.

Arthur discovered Nathan intended to take Sophie's modified cells for Emily.

He could not stop the procedure without exposing himself.

So he ordered reciprocal transfer, believing Emily’s normal regulatory cells might protect Sophie and contaminate Samuel’s clean dataset.

Rebecca looked horrified.

“You used two babies to sabotage their experiment.”

“Yes.”

Arthur's voice cracked.

“I told myself it was the only move I had.”

Claire felt tears rise.

“You could have called me.”

“Yes.”

“That's all you had to do.”

Arthur looked down.

“Yes.”

No defense.

No complicated science.

No claim that she could not understand.

Just yes.

Bell began reviewing the archive.

Then Arthur said one more thing.

“I can help Emily.”

Rebecca looked up.

“How?”

Arthur knew Miriam’s emergency reversible protocol.

More importantly, he had preserved a second blue archive.

Not cells.

Manufacturing templates.

The original safe formulations Miriam completed after Nathan’s copies diverged.

Dr. Shah could use them.

Claire stared.

“You've had this the entire time.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you come forward when Sophie got sick?”

“I tried.”

“How?”

Arthur pointed to a file.

Anonymous alerts to the hospital.

One warning sent before Sophie’s first chemotherapy.

Claire went cold.

DO NOT ALLOW TREATMENT.

Bell looked up.

“That message was you?”

Arthur nodded.

Claire stared.

Everyone had assumed it came from Adrian’s network.

Arthur sent it because he knew DNA-damaging chemotherapy could activate Samuel’s vector.

“You could have written why.”

“I believed the network intercepted detailed messages.”

“You could have called.”

“I thought—”

“No.”

Claire cut him off.

“No more thought.”

Arthur stopped.

She pointed around the archive.

“This is what thinking alone did.”

He lowered his eyes.

Bell found another recent file.

Arthur had been watching the remaining Continuity Board member movements.

Cross.

Lang.

Adrian.

And someone else.

One name appeared repeatedly in the last month.

Claire did not recognize it.

Rebecca did.

Her face drained.

“Dr. Helen Ward.”

Arthur nodded.

“Mom’s old department chair.”

Samuel heard the name through Bell’s connection.

His expression changed.

“Helen is alive?”

“Yes.”

Dr. Ward had overseen Miriam’s university lab during the earliest protective-construct research.

She signed the paperwork shutting Miriam down.

Publicly, she condemned unauthorized human experimentation.

Privately, Arthur’s evidence showed she preserved copies of Miriam’s work and later supplied them to investors.

Claire stared.

“So the university stopped Mom and sold the science.”

Arthur nodded.

“Eventually.”

Bell asked where Ward was now.

Arthur looked toward the clock.

“If my information is current, she’s meeting someone tonight.”

“Who?”

Arthur looked at Claire.

“Evelyn Cross.”

“But Cross is in custody.”

Arthur shook his head.

“Not Evelyn.”

Claire felt the next revelation before it arrived.

“Another Cross.”

Arthur opened a photograph.

A younger woman.

Early forties.

Physician.

Dr. Amelia Cross.

Evelyn’s daughter.

A geneticist.

Former NorthStar consultant.

And, according to Arthur, the current custodian of Miriam’s earliest unaltered human-cell research.

Claire stared at the photograph.

Another generation.

Another daughter inheriting someone else’s unfinished work.

Arthur said quietly, “The program isn't over because NorthStar is gone.”

Claire looked at him.

“Then this time nobody handles it alone.”

Bell nodded.

Rebecca stood beside her.

Arthur looked at both daughters.

Claire continued.

“No secret rescue. No private plan. No choosing for Sophie.”

Arthur’s eyes filled.

“Understood.”

Claire did not forgive him.

Not remotely.

But when Bell prepared to contact Dr. Shah with the safe manufacturing templates, Claire made Arthur sit beside her.

“You tell her everything.”

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

For the first time in decades, Arthur Morgan opened his records without deciding which truths other people were allowed to hear.

Click here to continue reading: PART 29: Arthur’s Records Led Agents to Amelia Cross, but the Geneticist Carried a Message Miriam Had Prepared for Claire Before Sophie Was Born

Claire did not believe Arthur Morgan could still be alive.
