Adrian didn\u2019t ask Maya. Nobody asked Lucas. people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you stop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took too long to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Finally: \u201cBecause every failure made me believe I was one correction away from success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the first it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy sister told you no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you kept going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire had imagined confronting the man responsible for Sophie&#39;s earliest violation.<\/p>\n<p>She had imagined rage.<\/p>\n<p>Accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe violence.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the clearest punishment seemed to be forcing Samuel to name each choice without hiding behind intention.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah returned.<\/p>\n<p>They had enough cells.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie could be disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel kissed the top of her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDone, Bug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Lucas\u2019s direction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The laboratory worked for three
