You cannot wait until symptoms appear.<\/p>\n<p>Claire froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelayed effects around maturity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah looked toward Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>Puberty.<\/p>\n<p>Renewal.<\/p>\n<p>Immune changes.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern repeated.<\/p>\n<p>Bell asked where the original letter had been sent.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Emily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah immediately ordered investigators to obtain current blood from Emily with her informed consent.<\/p>\n<p>Emily agreed.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later the results arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The old Miriam-derived construct inside Emily was not inactive.<\/p>\n<p>It was changing.<\/p>\n<p>Not rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet dangerously.<\/p>\n<p>But expression levels had risen significantly.<\/p>\n<p>Emily was nineteen.<\/p>\n<p>Developmentally mature.<\/p>\n<p>The construct that may have saved her as an infant had entered a new phase.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at the data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked toward Bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Nathan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Bell arranged a secure interview.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Vale appeared on screen, older than Claire remembered from the fake Westbrook clinic.<\/p>\n<p>His arrogance was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Claire held up Miriam\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou received this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Emily might develop delayed effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you monitor her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell her why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she know any of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked miserable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted her to have a normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie spoke from the bed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t make somebody\u2019s life normal by hiding their body from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>He had once pretended to be her pediatrician.<\/p>\n<p>Now he could barely meet her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Claire asked the final question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Miriam think would happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nathan answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought the protective construct might eventually begin treating normal immune maturation as disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilar to Cascade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCruder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut same failure principle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s body might soon begin attacking its own healthy immune development.<\/p>\n<p>Claire closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Another clock.<\/p>\n<p>Another young woman who had survived childhood only to reach the age when the thing that saved her might turn.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie looked toward Emily\u2019s video feed.<\/p>\n<p>Emily stared back.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the two girls could see each other.<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen and ten.<\/p>\n<p>Connected before either understood language.<\/p>\n<p>Emily touched the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo part of you is in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd part of you is in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily laughed nervously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire watched them.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily asked Dr. Shah, \u201cCan Sophie&#39;s rescue treatment work on me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Miriam\u2019s sequence.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shah answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot as written.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily\u2019s construct came from an earlier scientific generation.<\/p>\n<p>Different target.<\/p>\n<p>Different regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Different risk.<\/p>\n<p>But the principle might be adaptable.<\/p>\n<p>Emily nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we make another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get used to hearing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire did not smile.<\/p>\n<p>Because Rebecca had gone very still again.<\/p>\n<p>She was reading the final line of Miriam\u2019s last letter.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca turned the page toward Claire.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, beneath the signature, Miriam had added one handwritten note.<\/p>\n<p>If anything happens to me, do not let Samuel have the blue archive.<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat blue archive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s face on the monitor changed.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>And this time his fear was immediate.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30874\">Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Miriam\u2019s Blue Archive Contained a Treatment Samuel Had Hidden for Decades, but Opening It Required Rebecca to Revisit the Night Their Mother Died<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds, nobody in Sophie\u2019s room spoke.
