type.<\/p>\n<p>Not genetic suitability.<\/p>\n<p>A date.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Beside Sophie\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Claire felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens on that date?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel saw it through the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Claire turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared at the date.<\/p>\n<p>Then whispered, \u201cHer maintenance window.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat maintenance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>The original vector had been designed to renew itself at specific developmental intervals.<\/p>\n<p>Age three.<\/p>\n<p>Age six.<\/p>\n<p>Age ten.<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>The blood draws.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden follow-ups.<\/p>\n<p>The repeated samples.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel continued.<\/p>\n<p>At each interval, dormant modified cells either stabilized or entered a renewal phase.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s tenth-year renewal had been interrupted by the rescue vector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens when the next window arrives?\u201d Dr. Shah asked.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Sophie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross had come back for more than data.<\/p>\n<p>She had come because the experiment
