She had taken Sophie to a pediatrician. The doctor had examined her and asked questions about nausea and headaches.

Then he'd reassured Claire.

Early development happened.

Some children matured sooner.

Claire had wanted that answer.

So she'd taken Sophie home.

Now Dr. Shah showed them new images of the ovarian mass.

It didn't look exactly like a simple spread from the brain.

Claire stared at her.

"You're saying she might have two separate tumors?"

"It remains one possibility."

Sophie had been coloring a dragon. She lowered her crayon.

"Can everyone quit calling them tumors?"

The adults turned.

"They're in my body, so I should name them."

Daniel nodded.

"Fair."

Sophie pointed toward her head.

"That one is Kevin."

Claire almost laughed.

"Why Kevin?"

"There's a Kevin at school who gives me headaches."

Daniel turned away, shoulders shaking.

"And the other?"

Sophie considered the question seriously.

"Gertrude."

"Why?"

"It sounds like something that should leave."

The humor didn't survive the afternoon.

The working diagnosis became more specific. The intracranial mass strongly resembled a malignant germ-cell tumor capable of producing hormones. The ovarian growth also appeared consistent with a germ-cell tumor, though whether it represented the same disease remained uncertain.

Sophie looked at Dr. Shah.

"Is Kevin cancer?"

The doctor gave her the truth.

They believed it was.

Sophie's face changed.

"Am I going to die?"

Claire held her hand.

Dr. Shah explained that these tumors could respond very well to treatment. More information was still needed, but there were legitimate reasons for hope.

Sophie listened quietly.

Then asked whether cancer meant she'd lose the twelve dollars she'd already paid for the class trip.

Daniel promised to defend her investment.

Later Sophie asked Claire a different question.

"What if Daniel leaves?"

Claire stared at her.

"Why would he?"

"Because Eric made everyone think Dad did something."

"He didn't."

"But what if other people think he did?"

Claire explained that people could believe terrible things that weren't true.

Sophie picked at the blanket.

"Eric said Daniel isn't my real dad."

Claire suppressed her anger.

"Biology tells you who you're genetically related to. Parenting is bigger than one fact."

"Daniel stayed."

"Yes."

"Even when I threw up on him at the fair."

Claire smiled.

"Even then."

Sophie asked for him.

Daniel entered moments later.

She held out her arms.

"I still want you to be my dad."

Daniel stopped.

Then crossed the room and hugged her.

"Nothing changes that."

She whispered something Claire couldn't hear.

Daniel's face folded.

Much later, he told Claire what she'd asked.

Would he still be her father if Kevin ate part of her brain?

His answer had been immediate.

Especially then.

The following morning surgeons removed Gertrude.

Three hours later Sophie woke, groggy and irritable.

"Gertrude?"

"Gone," Daniel told her.

"Good."

She went back to sleep.

That evening there was a knock.

A woman displayed identification.

"Detective Amanda Reeves."

Daniel went pale.

The detective noticed.

"This isn't about you, Mr. Morgan."

Eric lowered his eyes.

Claire stood.

"Then why are police here?"

Detective Reeves said something was wrong with Sophie's medical history.

Had Sophie participated in clinical research?

No.

Genetic screening programs?

No.

Experimental treatment?

Absolutely not.

Had she ever been treated at St. Matthew's Pediatric Center?

Claire started to say no.

Daniel remembered first.

"The bike accident."

Three years earlier Sophie had crashed her bicycle while visiting Eric. She'd been taken to St. Matthew's for examination and discharged later.

"Was blood taken?" Reeves asked.

Claire thought so.

The detective wrote something down.

"Why does that matter?"

Because the hospital claimed Sophie Morgan had never been a patient there.

Claire stared at her.

"That's impossible."

Daniel remembered collecting her afterward.

Then came the stranger discovery.

Someone had accessed Sophie's current hospital chart eleven minutes after her positive hCG result entered the system.

The credentials belonged to a physician associated with St. Matthew's.

"Who?"

"Patrick Warren."

Claire felt immediate recognition.

"That's her pediatrician."

Detective Reeves stopped writing.

"Current pediatrician?"

"She saw him six months ago."

Reeves pulled out her phone.

Then she delivered a sentence that changed the entire investigation.

Patrick Warren had died fourteen months earlier.

Claire refused to believe it until Reeves showed her a photograph.

The dead physician was elderly, gray-haired, wearing narrow glasses.

Claire had never seen him.

"That's not the doctor who examined Sophie."

Daniel confirmed it.

Yet the man Claire had visited six months earlier had introduced himself as Dr. Patrick Warren.

He had examined Sophie.

He'd asked about headaches.

About nausea.

He'd checked her eyes.

He'd taken blood.

Then he'd dismissed Sophie's early development as an ordinary variation.

No MRI.

No referral.

No follow-up.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"He knew."

Detective Reeves couldn't confirm that.

But Claire couldn't escape the possibility.

Someone using a dead doctor's identity had examined her daughter while Sophie already showed symptoms of a brain tumor.

By the next morning the situation became stranger.

Westbrook Children's Clinic—the pediatric practice Claire remembered visiting—didn't officially exist.

She gave Reeves the address.

Property records showed a dental office.

Claire recognized the building perfectly.

The sign had been different.

Blue waiting chairs.

Painted fish.

Cartoons playing.

A bead maze.

A receptionist behind glass.

Then Reeves asked something simple.

"Do you remember any other patients?"

Claire searched her memory.

She couldn't.

No other children.

No other parents.

She had given that clinic everything.

Insurance information.

Identification.

Their address.

Emergency contacts.

Medical history.

Family history.

She had handed strangers a map of Sophie's life.

Later Detective Reeves returned with Special Agent Marcus Bell of the FBI.

The case now potentially involved fraudulent medical credentials, identity theft, unlawful access to medical records, interstate activity, and other victims.

Bell showed them a photograph.

The building now carried the sign Claire remembered.

WESTBROOK CHILDREN'S CLINIC.

Investigators believed the fake clinic had operated for only eleven weeks before disappearing.

Fourteen former pediatric patients had already been identified.

"Why?" Claire asked. "Why create an entire fake clinic?"

Bell didn't yet know.

Then he mentioned a company connected to the clinic.

NorthStar Medical Logistics.

Eric stopped moving.

Claire saw it immediately.

"What?"

Eric looked down.

"I used to work there."

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Eric’s Old Complaint Exposed a Pattern of Sick Children, but Sophie’s Earliest Hidden Record Reached Back to Her First Weeks of Life

By morning, specialists were no longer treating the two masses as unrelated discoveries.
