Soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dad told you I knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he talked to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked toward the closed door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you both thought I was making it bigger than it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt as if someone had struck me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded quickly, as though agreeing might calm me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Maya. THAT WILL ONLY ENCOURAGE HER.<\/p>\n<p>My hands began shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Five weeks ago, David might have misunderstood what the doctor said.<\/p>\n<p>He might have forgotten an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>He might even have convinced himself the follow-up was unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>But now, knowing that Maya had already been evaluated and told to return, he was still encouraging me to dismiss her.<\/p>\n<p>I took screenshots.<\/p>\n<p>When Maya returned, she looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse helped her onto the examination bed and covered her legs with a blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, the nurse paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour daughter asked whether she could speak with you privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited until the door closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Dad coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t tell him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visible relief crossed her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t you want him here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll make me change what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does it all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asks questions until I\u2019m not sure anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I forced myself to stay calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me an example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the first appointment, I told him the pain was worse. He said I\u2019d told the doctor it was getting better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened when you told him that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said I remembered wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She rubbed her thumb over the edge of the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does that with other stuff too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat other stuff?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of arguments I had witnessed between them. David correcting Maya\u2019s memory. David telling her she had misunderstood his tone. David insisting conversations had happened differently.<\/p>\n<p>I had sometimes defended him.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the hospital visit,\u201d Maya continued, \u201che took my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that.<\/p>\n<p>David told me she had been using it after midnight. I had agreed with the punishment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did he really take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPictures of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe papers they gave us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deleted them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere your photos backed up?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave her my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We logged into her cloud account.<\/p>\n<p>There were hundreds of photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Friends. Homework. Our dog asleep upside down. Screenshots of ridiculous memes. A picture of me eating spaghetti that made Maya smile despite herself.<\/p>\n<p>Then we reached the date of the first hospital visit.<\/p>\n<p>Three photographs appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The first showed her wristband.<\/p>\n<p>The second captured part of a discharge sheet.<\/p>\n<p>The third was clear enough to read.<\/p>\n<p>Follow-up imaging.<\/p>\n<p>Return precautions.<\/p>\n<p>Instructions to seek immediate care if certain symptoms worsened.<\/p>\n<p>Maya stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me I misunderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I saved every image.<\/p>\n<p>Then I emailed copies to myself and to an account David could not access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya became still.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI emailed him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the appointment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We searched an old family account she used for school registrations.<\/p>\n<p>One message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The subject was simple.<\/p>\n<p>PLEASE TELL MOM.<\/p>\n<p>I asked permission before opening it.<\/p>\n<p>Maya nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The message was short. She had told David the pain remained, that she was frightened, and that she wanted me told about the recommended scan.<\/p>\n<p>His response was colder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>He told her to stop searching symptoms online.<\/p>\n<p>He told her they would reconsider if the pain continued.<\/p>\n<p>A second exchange followed days later.<\/p>\n<p>Maya had written that it still hurt.<\/p>\n<p>David told her to drop the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Then he warned that if she continued pushing, I would think she was seeking attention too.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>He had not forgotten to tell me.<\/p>\n<p>He had deliberately used me to silence her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I need you to hear it. I never knew about this visit. I never agreed to cancel anything. And I never told your father I thought you were pretending.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears ran down her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those three words hurt more than an accusation would have.<\/p>\n<p>A knock interrupted us.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor returned.<\/p>\n<p>His expression had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the tests gave us information we need to investigate further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat information?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a specialist to evaluate Maya today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we go home first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor continued carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to speculate before the specialist reviews everything.
