built on parallel sets of hidden documents, each capable of destroying another.<\/p>\n<p>The difference this time was personal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does any of this have to do with Patricia\u2019s attempt to get the release code?\u201d Ryan asked.<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother found out Rebecca existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane Mercer had been digging for leverage.<\/p>\n<p>She found Rebecca\u2019s obituary.<\/p>\n<p>Property records.<\/p>\n<p>Old photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Then the child.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia threatened Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel responded by accelerating plans to neutralize everyone around her.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked custody.<\/p>\n<p>Police questioned him again.<\/p>\n<p>For hours he gave nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then investigators showed him that Victor had talked.<\/p>\n<p>Mason\u2019s silence broke.<\/p>\n<p>Not completely.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves instructed him to locate the daughter three months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Mason found her.<\/p>\n<p>Did not touch her.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>He installed surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>Photographed routines.<\/p>\n<p>Collected mail information.<\/p>\n<p>Then Patricia discovered part of the surveillance operation.<\/p>\n<p>She stole copies.<\/p>\n<p>That was dozens.<\/p>\n<p>Human beings resisted simplicity even when I wanted them to be simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is the daughter?\u201d I asked again.<\/p>\n<p>Mason knew.<\/p>\n<p>The name he gave us did time, Claire thought he was being intrusive.<\/p>\n<p>Now she understood.<\/p>\n<p>He was monitoring his secret daughter through his acknowledged one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened between you and Natalie?\u201d Margaret asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe lost touch after graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe suddenly stopped answering me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked toward Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when Daniel found out Rebecca left her records to Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He must have ordered distance.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe threatened Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she discovered something.<\/p>\n<p>Claire whispered, \u201cHe used me to find her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Victor said.<\/p>\n<p>The pain in his voice was raw.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators searched Natalie\u2019s old communications.<\/p>\n<p>The last message she sent Claire was brief.<\/p>\n<p>Your father isn\u2019t who you think.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had dismissed it as bitterness after some disagreement with Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>She had never replied.<\/p>\n<p>Now she read it they explained Reeves was wanted for kidnapping.<\/p>\n<p>She gave a destination.<\/p>\n<p>A railway storage facility near the state border.<\/p>\n<p>Police arrived too late.<\/p>\n<p>Locker door open.<\/p>\n<p>Contents gone.<\/p>\n<p>A small pool of blood near the handle.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to indicate severe injury.<\/p>\n<p>Enough to indicate a struggle.<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance footage showed Natalie arriving.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, a man entered.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The missing evidence clerk.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves\u2019s inside asset.<\/p>\n<p>He followed Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Then both disappeared from camera.<\/p>\n<p>A third person arrived nine minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Woman.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball cap.<\/p>\n<p>Diane Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Diane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane entered the locker area.<\/p>\n<p>Left carrying a document case.<\/p>\n<p>No Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>No Hall.<\/p>\n<p>She had been following them too.<\/p>\n<p>Three sides converging on Rebecca\u2019s archive.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves through Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s operation through Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie trying to save it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Diane do with the case?\u201d Margaret asked.<\/p>\n<p>Cameras tracked her to the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>She drove north.<\/p>\n<p>Same direction police had already traced her before losing her vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Then Karen spoke from the hospital line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where she went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a Carter project site near the northern border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sold that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karen shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main property sold. One maintenance house stayed under an inactive subsidiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou. Me. Patricia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Diane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The maintenance house sat deep behind an unfinished subdivision.<\/p>\n<p>Diane\u2019s car was there.<\/p>\n<p>So was Nathan Hall\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>No Reeves vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Officers surrounded the property.<\/p>\n<p>Inside they found Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Alive but restrained.<\/p>\n<p>And Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Injured.<\/p>\n<p>Also alive.<\/p>\n<p>Diane surrendered.<\/p>\n<p>The document case sat on the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>I nearly laughed from sheer disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves\u2019s secret daughter had been rescued by Patricia\u2019s sister.<\/p>\n<p>Not out of kindness.<\/p>\n<p>Out of leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Diane explained under questioning.<\/p>\n<p>She followed Nathan because Patricia had ordered her months earlier to watch anyone connected to Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>When Nathan attacked Natalie at the locker, Diane intervened.<\/p>\n<p>Hit him with a tire iron.<\/p>\n<p>Took both of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not call police?\u201d Margaret asked.<\/p>\n<p>Diane stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I had the documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence was still currency.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie received medical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>She had a head wound and fractured wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Then she asked to speak to Claire.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting happened under observation.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie entered with her arm in a splint.<\/p>\n<p>Claire stood.<\/p>\n<p>Neither moved at first.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor not believing you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t know enough to believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No easy absolution.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Claire accepted it.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother left records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward investigators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know there are records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat don\u2019t we know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey aren\u2019t only about my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word father sounded strange in her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie looked directly toward Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Another secret.<\/p>\n<p>Another layer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother worked for Carter Development before I was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas, watching remotely, went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas whispered, \u201cRebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my assistant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Hale had not merely known Reeves.<\/p>\n<p>She had worked for Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Before Bellmont.<\/p>\n<p>Before most of the crimes we had uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie opened the document case.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were Rebecca\u2019s letters.<\/p>\n<p>One addressed to Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Never sent.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie read the first line.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas, if Daniel ever tells you Bellmont was his idea, he is lying.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stared at his father.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Because suddenly even the beginning of the story we thought we understood was uncertain.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30795\">Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Rebecca Hale\u2019s Letters Rewrote the Beginning of Bellmont, and Thomas Finally Admitted the Betrayal He Had Buried for Fifteen Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Victor Hale refused to discuss Rebecca at first.
