police.”

“Yes.”

Ryan frowned.

Reeves continued.

“Ask the officers whether his medication was changed this afternoon.”

Thomas looked sharply toward his IV.

Every person in the room froze.

Ryan’s face drained.

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything.”

Reeves hung up.

Thomas immediately stopped the IV line himself.

Nurses rushed in.

The medication bag was removed.

Hospital security sealed the floor.

Tests began.

Within twenty minutes, a pharmacist found the discrepancy.

The label was correct.

The contents were not.

A sedative.

Far nothing.

Reeves had reached inside a guarded hospital.

Again, control.

Again, the message that walls meant nothing.

Then the investigator’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Turned toward us.

Airport police had found Claire’s rideshare driver.

He remembered where she had asked to stop before disappearing into the parking structure.

Not a hotel.

A private medical office.

The office belonged to Dr. Laura Reeves.

Claire’s mother.

Police were already there.

And according to emergency dispatch, neighbors had reported one gunshot from inside the building twelve minutes earlier.

<a
