Then the children. Then our reputation. The truth is simpler. I was ashamed, and shame made me a coward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked down.<\/p>\n<p>The word coward had followed both father and son.<\/p>\n<p>Different circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Same result.<\/p>\n<p>Silence where action was required.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said he finally decided to expose everything after discovering how much money Patricia and Reeves had moved.<\/p>\n<p>He expected criminal consequences for himself.<\/p>\n<p>He had already met privately with investigators.<\/p>\n<p>The flash drive contained correspondence documenting those meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret found them.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had approached federal financial-crimes authorities seventeen days before my wedding.<\/p>\n<p>He had offered cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>He had disclosed Bellmont.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan whispered, \u201cHe turned himself in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEssentially,\u201d Margaret said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy wasn\u2019t he arrested?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCooperation agreements take time. Investigators were building the larger case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explained Thomas\u2019s secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>His private meetings.<\/p>\n<p>His moving documents.<\/p>\n<p>His fear.<\/p>\n<p>It also explained why Patricia had become desperate near the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>She did not merely fear losing control of Carter Development.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was preparing to expose everything.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the transfer documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy give me twenty-five percent if he expected the government to investigate the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep Patricia from stripping assets while the case developed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA protected ownership block could make certain transactions harder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, Thomas had used me strategically.<\/p>\n<p>Even if his purpose was defensive, I had never consented.<\/p>\n<p>I would not forget that.<\/p>\n<p>A detective entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas is awake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked smaller than he had at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Bruises darkened one side of his face.<\/p>\n<p>His shoulder was bandaged.<\/p>\n<p>An IV ran into his arm.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Ryan first.<\/p>\n<p>Then me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found Bellmont.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not a question.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan remained by the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole from the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to Evan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let Mom use it against you for eleven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every answer came without resistance.<\/p>\n<p>That somehow made Ryan angrier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay something besides yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you like me to say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat there\u2019s an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan waited.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there isn\u2019t an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were the one I trusted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made me think Mom did all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t tell me about Bellmont.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou judged me for avoiding conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wrote that note like you were better than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I recognized what I had taught you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked toward the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI avoided the truth for years. You watched me do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou worked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hid at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s anger faltered.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen your mother was angry, I stayed late. When she manipulated you children, I told myself interfering would make it worse. When she began stealing, I told myself exposing her would destroy the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI taught you that silence was protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan sat.<\/p>\n<p>Neither spoke for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Thomas said, \u201cI am sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan wiped his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what to do with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer mattered.<\/p>\n<p>No demand for forgiveness.<\/p>\n<p>No request to understand.<\/p>\n<p>Just responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>I moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you were outside the pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still had no right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou transferred company shares into my control without explaining the danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made me a target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes closed briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia forged my signature because of something you did behind my back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t care that you thought you were protecting the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was so focused on stopping Patricia that I treated your independence like a tool I could use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The precision of the admission stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou owe me more than an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe choice I should have given you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen this is over, if those shares remain legally transferable, you decide what happens to them. Keep them. Sell them. Return them. Dissolve whatever can be dissolved.
