down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd by protecting us, he taught us nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like Thomas\u2019s own realization from the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about parents.<\/p>\n<p>About marriage.<\/p>\n<p>About the difference between sheltering someone and preparing them.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ryan\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>A of trees off a narrow county road.<\/p>\n<p>Three buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Two empty.<\/p>\n<p>The third contained a folding chair bolted to the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Zip ties.<\/p>\n<p>A stained towel.<\/p>\n<p>Medication.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s medication.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan picked up the prescription bottle after investigators cleared it.<\/p>\n<p>His hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A camera had been mounted over the door.<\/p>\n<p>Removed.<\/p>\n<p>But the cable remained.<\/p>\n<p>Data storage might exist elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Then an investigator called us toward a workbench.<\/p>\n<p>Scratched into the wood were four characters.<\/p>\n<p>9-17-H.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret photographed it.<\/p>\n<p>Evan stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen that format.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas used it for file references.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPage nine, line seventeen, maybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had known someone might find him.<\/p>\n<p>If he had been held here, maybe he left a reference.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret called the detective overseeing the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>They photographed page nine.<\/p>\n<p>Line seventeen contained a transaction.<\/p>\n<p>Date.<\/p>\n<p>Amount.<\/p>\n<p>Entity.<\/p>\n<p>Harbor Ridge Management.<\/p>\n<p>I read the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes anyone know it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The address associated with Harbor Ridge led to another property.<\/p>\n<p>A marina.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy miles east.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan was already walking toward the car.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swore.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Another choice.<\/p>\n<p>Another tiny break in an old pattern.<\/p>\n<p>We drove behind officers.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway there, Margaret called.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice had speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia instructed Mason to retrieve the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We already knew that.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also instructed him to make sure Emily could not testify about the document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody in the car spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s hands tightened around the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means the message is being treated as a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure Emily can\u2019t identify who prepared the papers.
