Don\u2019t do it again.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Dad\u2019s handwriting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The message was clearly for him.<\/p>\n<p>The detective asked whether Thomas often left cryptic notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould someone imitate his handwriting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Everything needed verification now.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing could be accepted simply because it looked familiar.<\/p>\n<p>That lesson was becoming painfully consistent.<\/p>\n<p>Another technician emerged from the room.<\/p>\n<p>He handed the detective a small plastic bag.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a hotel keycard.<\/p>\n<p>Room 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t Thomas\u2019s room,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n<p>They checked.<\/p>\n<p>Room 22 had been rented under the name Michael Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Cash.<\/p>\n<p>No identification retained beyond a photocopy that appeared fraudulent.<\/p>\n<p>Police opened the room.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>But the wastebasket contained shredded paper.<\/p>\n<p>Not cross-cut.<\/p>\n<p>Simple strips.<\/p>\n<p>The pieces were collected.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret convinced the detective to let us know generally what they appeared to contain.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate account numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Property addresses.<\/p>\n<p>One partial phrase survived.<\/p>\n<p>WESTMARK\u2014<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Westmark Consulting.<\/p>\n<p>One of the shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan whispered, \u201cReeves was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe,\u201d Margaret said.<\/p>\n<p>The detective looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She explained.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation widened immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Local police contacted financial-crimes investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s disappearance was no longer separate from the corporate fraud evidence.<\/p>\n<p>By late afternoon, we were still waiting at the motel when my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Margaret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put it on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s voice was controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, I need to speak with Ryan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you\u2019ve involved the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad is missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m aware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police contacted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her composure cracked slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan heard it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you\u2019re scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I\u2019m scared. My husband is missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t sound scared yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what I\u2019m dealing with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t discuss it over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan ignored her signal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Emily is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Even now.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s voice became cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou forged her signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret shut her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan had crossed exactly the line she wanted avoided.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia recovered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is an outrageous accusation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw the footage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat footage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe notary office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>Madison\u2019s voice suddenly sounded in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, hang up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan heard her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMadison\u2019s with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia said, \u201cRyan, listen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You listen. Dad left evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That part was bluff.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia did not know how much we had.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew about the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line became so quiet I thought it had disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>Then Patricia spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand what your father did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe endangered everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy catching you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou arrogant little fool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan flinched.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first time I had heard Patricia speak to him with open contempt.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think that company belongs to Thomas alone? I built that life with him. I hosted clients. I gave up opportunities. I raised you while he worked every hour God sent him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you stole from him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took what I was owed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>A confession, not complete but significant.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan whispered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patricia realized what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. That isn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Madison shouted, \u201cHang up!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret immediately saved the recording.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe admitted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPartially,\u201d Margaret said. \u201cAnd emotionally. That helps, but it doesn\u2019t resolve everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the phrase Patricia had used.<\/p>\n<p>What I was owed.<\/p>\n<p>Not greed in her mind.<\/p>\n<p>Entitlement.<\/p>\n<p>That was worse.<\/p>\n<p>People who believed they were entitled to something could justify almost anything done to obtain it.<\/p>\n<p>The detective approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reconstructed some of the shredded papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed Margaret copies.<\/p>\n<p>One page showed property purchases.<\/p>\n<p>Several shell companies.<\/p>\n<p>Another contained initials.<\/p>\n<p>PRC.<\/p>\n<p>DR.<\/p>\n<p>MC.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPRC could be Patricia Renee Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDR,\u201d I said. \u201cDaniel Reeves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s MC?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>The detective turned to Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes your sister have a middle name beginning with C?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Madison Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all looked at one another.<\/p>\n<p>MC.<\/p>\n<p>Madison Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective did not react.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But we already knew what Ryan was thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Madison was not merely aware.<\/p>\n<p>Her initials appeared beside transactions.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle entered the motel parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked toward it.<\/p>\n<p>The driver got out.<\/p>\n<p>A man in his early sixties, gray hair, soaked coat.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan Cole looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>And frightened.<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward us with both hands visible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard the police were here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan crossed the distance quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan grabbed his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officers moved forward.<\/p>\n<p>Evan raised his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked toward the officers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas received a message from Madison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan released him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat message?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan reached into his pocket slowly.<\/p>\n<p>He handed over his phone.<\/p>\n<p>The detective read the screenshot.<\/p>\n<p>Dad, Mom knows where you are. I can help you. Meet me alone.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>His face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan pointed toward the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn abandoned Carter property six miles from here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective immediately began issuing instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan turned toward our car.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret blocked him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are not going ahead of police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if someone is waiting there, you becoming another victim helps no one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked ready to fight.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Because Thomas\u2019s note had been written specifically for him.<\/p>\n<p>You always chose peace over truth.
