She could not control you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas barely knew me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t he tell me any of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hoped he\u2019d fix it before you were dragged in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour wedding date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you married Ryan, Patricia realized Thomas\u2019s new estate plan could become permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPermanent how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Thomas had already signed the transfer documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat transfer documents?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>But the caller ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret immediately began dialing someone.<\/p>\n<p>I felt as though the floor had shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had not merely written me into a future inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>If the caller was telling the truth, he had already begun moving ownership.<\/p>\n<p>And Patricia knew.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Not the unknown caller this time.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan grabbed my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds there was only static.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice came through, weak and hurried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas, are you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan moved closer to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan. Good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His breathing sounded strained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, do not sign anything.
