We investigate before accusing anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She instructed both of us not to contact Patricia about the suspected forgery.<\/p>\n<p>If evidence existed, Margaret did not want anyone warned in time to alter or destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon she contacted the attorney who had handled Thomas\u2019s estate planning.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, we had confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s amendment was genuine.<\/p>\n<p>My twenty-five-percent interest was genuine.<\/p>\n<p>And Patricia had known about it before the wedding.<\/p>\n<p>More than that, she had objected.<\/p>\n<p>The estate attorney produced correspondence Patricia had sent weeks before Ryan and I married. She had argued against giving me such a significant interest in Carter Development and urged Thomas to keep control within the immediate family, preferably by directing the disputed shares toward Madison.<\/p>\n<p>I finished reading and looked at Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wanted Madison to get them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He appeared sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>That complicated everything.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan had failed me as a husband.<\/p>\n<p>But failure and conspiracy were not necessarily the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret placed another paper before us.<\/p>\n<p>It was correspondence from Thomas to his attorney concerning my ownership interest.<\/p>\n<p>The instructions were unusually protective. Thomas wanted any shares left to me placed beyond family pressure. Ryan was not to transfer, pledge, or control them without my approval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would your father go this far?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was worried about something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She produced an internal accounting report.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers meant little to me until she pointed out several transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Large withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of dollars had moved out of Carter Development during the previous eighteen months through companies neither Ryan nor I recognized.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret indicated one of the accounts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia appears as an authorized signatory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan leaned over the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat has to be wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother doesn\u2019t control company finances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently she controlled enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hands began to tremble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to call Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d Margaret said.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we don\u2019t know what Thomas knows. We also don\u2019t know who has access to him or his information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan sat down again.<\/p>\n<p>The family problem had expanded beyond anything either of us understood.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret arranged for the signature on the agreement to be examined by a forensic document specialist.<\/p>\n<p>Then she examined the signature page herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no valid notary stamp here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the writing.<\/p>\n<p>Something about the final letters bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>The angle.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered sitting at Patricia\u2019s dining-room table weeks before the wedding, addressing invitation envelopes by hand because she insisted handwriting looked warmer than printed labels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know where someone could have gotten a sample.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe invitations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I explained.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia had kept several envelopes I addressed. She had also seen countless cards and wedding-planning forms bearing my handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret placed the agreement into a secure folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may become important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside her office, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>The same pattern of digits I had been ignoring since the night I left Patricia\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>This time, I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then breathing.<\/p>\n<p>A man spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, don\u2019t trust Patricia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My entire body stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you calling me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you\u2019re looking in the wrong direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe document wasn\u2019t created just to take your inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Ryan, who was standing several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inheritance was the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan came toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated the warning.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan immediately reached for his own phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I caught his wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret told us not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what are we supposed to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe find out what she\u2019s hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening Ryan drove me to my mother\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Before I got out, he switched off the engine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He gripped the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father said something before the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me that if Mom ever asked you to sign anything, I should stop you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved over my skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he was being paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t think to mention it when we found a document carrying a signature I never wrote?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t remember until today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked toward my mother\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, Dad has been acting strangely for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of strangely?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivate meetings. Moving documents out of the office. Asking questions about company accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The financial reports flashed through my mind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disappeared this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze with my hand on the door handle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean disappeared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe never came to the office. His phone is off.
