It was not the potatoes she had ordered me to peel twice because the first batch was “too thick.” It was not even Madison, my new sister-in-law, sitting ten feet away at the breakfast counter, scrolling through her phone while I prepared dinner for people I barely knew.

The mistake was believing Ryan when he had promised marriage would make us a team.

“Emily.” Patricia’s voice came from behind me. “Those plates aren’t going to set themselves.”

I put down the knife and turned. “I’m still finishing the meat.”

“The meat can rest.”

She said it with the calm authority of someone correcting an employee.

Patricia was immaculate despite having spent almost no time in the kitchen. Her silver-blond hair sat perfectly above the collar of her cream blouse. A narrow gold bracelet clicked against her watch as she checked the time.

Ryan had warned me that his mother liked things done properly. I had pictured matching napkins and punctual dinners.

I had not pictured this.

“I’ll set them in a minute,” I said.

Patricia’s mouth tightened. “Dinner is in twelve minutes.”

Madison glanced up from her phone long enough to smirk.

I looked at her. “Could you help with the plates?”

She blinked as though I had suggested she wash the driveway with a toothbrush.

“Me?”

“There are six of us eating.”

Madison gave a short laugh. “Mom asked you.”

Patricia folded her arms.

“Emily, in this family we don’t argue over every little responsibility.”

I almost laughed at the absurdity of it. I had been working since before noon. Madison had arrived two hours earlier, poured herself a glass of wine, and settled onto a stool. Ryan had disappeared with his father, Thomas, to discuss something related to Carter Development.

Apparently my responsibility was everything involving food.

Madison’s responsibility was watching.

I wiped my hands on a towel. “I’m not arguing. I asked for help.”

Patricia stepped closer.

“You’re Ryan’s wife now. There are expectations that come with joining this family.”

Something in her phrasing made me still.

Joining this family.

Not marrying Ryan.

Joining them.

The distinction had been growing clearer by the hour.

The weekend had started pleasantly enough. Ryan and I had returned from our short honeymoon Friday afternoon, and Patricia had invited us to the Carter house for what Ryan described as a relaxed family weekend.

I should have become suspicious when Patricia handed me an apron twenty minutes after we arrived.

At first I thought she was joking.

Then she gave me a list.

Breakfast Saturday. Lunch. Dinner preparations. Sunday brunch.

“Mom likes hosting,” Ryan had whispered when I showed him the paper.

“Then why am I hosting?”

He had kissed my temple.

“Just humor her. It’ll make things easier.”

That sentence had become the soundtrack of my first three days as a Carter.

Humor her.

Ignore it.

Don’t take it personally.

That’s just Mom.

Ryan had explanations for everything except why his mother’s comfort mattered more than mine.

I carried the plates into the dining room and placed them around Patricia’s polished table. Thomas was already there, reading something on his phone.

Unlike Patricia, he had treated me with an almost surprising warmth from the beginning. He was reserved, but he listened when I spoke. During the wedding reception, he had pulled me aside and told me he was glad Ryan had found someone who made him think beyond himself.

At the time, I had taken it as a compliment.

Now, remembering the seriousness in Thomas’s eyes, I wondered whether there had been more behind it.

“Need help?” he asked.

Before I could answer, Patricia appeared.

“She has it.”

Thomas looked from his wife to me.

“I asked Emily.”

“I’m fine,” I said automatically.

There it was again.

The reflex to prevent discomfort.

Thomas studied me for a second longer than necessary, then put his phone away.

Ryan entered with two bottles of wine.

He smiled when he saw me.

“There’s my wife.”

For one ridiculous second, hearing him call me that softened something inside me.

Then Patricia handed him the corkscrew.

“Ryan, open these. Emily still needs to bring in the vegetables.”

He obeyed.

No one seemed to notice the irony.

I returned to the kitchen.

The roast beef smelled wonderful. Rosemary, garlic, black pepper. I had followed a recipe my mother used for Christmas dinners, and despite Patricia’s running criticism, it had turned out beautifully.

I removed the foil and tested the center.

Behind me, Madison entered carrying her empty glass.

“More wine?”

I pointed toward the bottle in the dining room.

She sighed.

“Could you bring it?”

I stared at her.

She stared back.

“No.”

Madison’s eyebrows rose.

“What?”

“You can get it yourself.”

The silence that followed was almost comical.

“You don’t have to be rude.”

“I’m cooking dinner.”

“For the family.”

“Yes. I had smiled while Patricia corrected the way I folded towels. I had ignored Madison asking whether I planned to keep working now that I had “married into money.” I had listened while Patricia explained that Carter women understood the importance of supporting the men in their family.

I had even laughed when she suggested my own mother had probably raised me differently because “ordinary families have different standards.”

But something inside me had reached its limit.

Ryan entered the kitchen just as Patricia said, “You are a guest in my home, Emily.
