depends on what the file means.”

Briggs placed a folder on the table.

SARAH THORNE.

My stomach tightened.

The earliest document was eight years old.

Long before the storm.

Long before Julian.

Before I even worked my current Apex route.

Sarah sat.

I remained standing.

“What was Apex doing with my wife eight years ago?”

Briggs opened the folder.

“They may not have been.”

That confused me.

The first item was a photocopy of a complaint Sarah had filed with a hospital where she once worked.

She had been a respiratory therapist before leaving full-time clinical work after Chloe was born.

I remembered that.

I did not remember the complaint.

I looked at her.

“You filed this?”

Sarah stared at the page.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before Chloe.”

“Why have I never heard about it?”

Her face tightened.

“Because it was over.”

Briggs said nothing.

I sat beside Sarah.

“What happened?”

She took a breath.

“A patient died.”

The room softened.

“Equipment failed.”

“What equipment?”

“Portable oxygen regulator.”

Briggs slid another document forward.

Manufacturer:

Merrick Medical Systems.

Rebecca leaned toward it.

“What does that have to do with Apex?”

Briggs answered.

“Apex handled Merrick’s regional distribution.”

My stomach tightened.

Sarah looked at me.

“You remember those medical loads I used to complain about?”

“Temperature-control stuff?”

“Yes.”

She turned back to Briggs.

“What does any of this have to do with Vane?”

The next page answered.

Curtis Vane had conducted an “external exposure review” for Merrick after the patient’s family threatened litigation.

His report listed witnesses.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Respiratory staff.

Sarah.

Her name had been there years before Vane ever photographed our house because of me.

For one strange second, I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because we had assumed my connection to Vane was the beginning.

It wasn’t.

Sarah had crossed his path first.

“What happened to the complaint?” Briggs asked.

Sarah looked down.

“Administration said the regulator reported problems with units from that shipment before.”

“How many?”

“Three.”

“Were they documented?”

“Yes.”

Briggs opened another page.

They had been.

Merrick received the complaints.

So did Apex.

The equipment had arrived damaged.

Boxes crushed.

Temperature indicators triggered on several cartons.

Sarah stared.

“I never knew Apex was part of it.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“What did they do?”

Rebecca read the receiving log.

Apex terminal personnel noted damaged packaging.

Merrick told them to release the shipment after visual inspection.

Apex complied.

One of the regulators later failed in Sarah’s hospital.

Again, nobody could prove the shipping damage caused the failure.

But the file showed something else.

The Apex supervisor who released the shipment despite the damage report was Benjamin Sloan.

Rebecca went pale.

“My father.”

Sarah looked at her.

“You’re telling me your dad was involved in my complaint too?”

“Apparently.”

The overlap was almost unbelievable.

Then Briggs corrected it.

“Not directly in the hospital complaint. In the shipment release.”

Accuracy.

Again.

The patient’s death could not be attributed to Benjamin.

The device manufacturer had its own quality failures.

Hospital handling could matter.

The regulator may have had an unrelated defect.

But Benjamin had approved releasing a damaged medical shipment that later became part of a fatal investigation.

And Vane had investigated the witnesses afterward.

“What did Vane do to Sarah?” I asked.

Briggs turned the page.

“Mostly surveillance.”

Sarah looked at me.

“Mostly?”

Three photographs.

Sarah leaving the hospital.

Sarah meeting with the patient’s daughter.

Sarah entering a lawyer’s office.

My anger rose.

“You met a lawyer?”

Sarah’s head snapped toward to one.”

“Why?”

“Because the hospital told me to stop discussing the damaged equipment.”

Briggs asked, “Did
