Chloe had gone upstairs twenty minutes earlier, though I doubted she was asleep. Our house was quiet enough that every word coming through my phone seemed louder than it should have been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiriam\u2019s car?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill in the garage,\u201d Rebecca said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she didn\u2019t drive away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Calvin\u2019s car is there too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>Two people had entered the same building.<\/p>\n<p>Neither had been recorded leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Miriam had appeared on camera after Calvin vanished from the conference room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe she took him out another way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what Briggs is trying to determine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The obvious conclusion was ugly.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam had been Claire Benton\u2019s confidential source. She had secretly supplied evidence against Apex while serving as the company attorney. She had access to executives, legal strategy, preservation notices and the internal response to every discovery we made.<\/p>\n<p>If she had also helped Calvin disappear, nobody knew what side she had been on.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah seemed to read the thought on my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t decide she\u2019s guilty because she kept secrets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re doing the jaw thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat jaw thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one where you\u2019ve already convicted somebody in your head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I started to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me a second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice moved away from the phone.<\/p>\n<p>I heard Hart speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conference room has a service door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity didn\u2019t know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like a wall panel from inside. It opens into an old executive records corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere does that go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFreight elevator. Basement loading area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCamera?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer landed exactly the way I expected.<\/p>\n<p>The camera covering the basement loading area had been removed during renovations six months earlier. According to building records, replacement had been scheduled twice and delayed twice.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah whispered, \u201cConvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Briggs called me directly the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>She did not ask me to come to Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she asked about Miriam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want to know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything unusual she said around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat covers a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought through the previous days.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam had been cautious from the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>She had corrected assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>Warned us not to accuse people before evidence supported it.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped me from trying to contact Aaron Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Insisted that missing people were not automatically fugitives.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had thought it was lawyer behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Now every sentence seemed capable of carrying another meaning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe defended Calvin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly defended. When his car was found at the airport, Paul said he ran. Miriam said we didn\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe kept saying versions of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Briggs waited.<\/p>\n<p>I understood why.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think she knew he wasn\u2019t running.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I asked what you remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I disliked investigators when they did that.<\/p>\n<p>They could turn silence into a tool.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt headquarters, when we found Aaron\u2019s files missing, Miriam knew Calvin\u2019s airport information before some of the others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed legal had been told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she say who told her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything about Voss Consulting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name caught me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Voss had appeared only at the edges of the investigation. Outside consulting. Old payments. A company whose name sat beside transactions in Eric Nolan\u2019s hidden records.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered seeing it.<\/p>\n<p>Then another memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiriam once corrected Rebecca about an invoice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe two days ago. Rebecca called Voss a security contractor. Miriam said it was risk consulting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Briggs went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPretty sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad anyone established that distinction yet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She thanked me and ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>That bothered me more than if she had explained.<\/p>\n<p>By noon, Rebecca arrived at my house.<\/p>\n<p>She looked exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah poured her coffee without asking.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca drank half the cup before speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoss Consulting wasn\u2019t just an outside vendor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a funnel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney. Information. People.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She placed a printed sheet on our kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>Voss had received Apex payments for risk assessment, claims management and regulatory consulting.<\/p>\n<p>Those invoices looked ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath them, investigators had found subcontractor payments.<\/p>\n<p>Private investigators.<\/p>\n<p>Former maintenance inspectors.<\/p>\n<p>A retired state transportation official.<\/p>\n<p>And Curtis Vane.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at his name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Apex paid Vane through Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho authorized it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was bad enough.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca tapped another line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes Miriam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stopped beside the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiriam authorized payments to Vane?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegal expenses. At least that\u2019s how they were categorized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who had secretly given evidence to a reporter had also approved money reaching the man who later photographed my house.<\/p>\n<p>That contradiction was too large to ignore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe she became Claire\u2019s source because she knew what Vane was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s one possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was protecting herself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I could respond, her phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Briggs.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca answered on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found Calvin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d Rebecca asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou searched it yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe searched the occupied floors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like an excuse until she explained.<\/p>\n<p>The freight elevator descended below the marked basement.<\/p>\n<p>Voss Consulting had leased an old document-storage level not shown on the public directory. The access control system had been disconnected from the building\u2019s main security network.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin was found there.<\/p>\n<p>Locked inside a records cage.<\/p>\n<p>Dehydrated.<\/p>\n<p>Bruised.<\/p>\n<p>One wrist fractured.<\/p>\n<p>But alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho put him there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Curtis Vane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>Vane was already in custody.<\/p>\n<p>Briggs continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalvin says Vane forced him to remove files from the Westfield archive. He says Vane then ordered him to meet at Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo destroy records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger came quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin had helped bury maintenance findings.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever had happened to him afterward did not erase that.<\/p>\n<p>Briggs apparently anticipated the reaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is not being treated as innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he may also be a victim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both could be true.<\/p>\n<p>I was learning how often that happened.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked the question that mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Miriam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calvin said she arrived during his confrontation with Vane.<\/p>\n<p>She had not helped Vane.<\/p>\n<p>She had tried to stop him.<\/p>\n<p>According to Calvin, Miriam told Vane the investigation had gone too far and that Claire already possessed enough evidence to expose them.<\/p>\n<p>Vane became violent.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin tried to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Vane hit him.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam helped Calvin into the hidden records level and locked the cage from the outside.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t sound like helping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may have saved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vane apparently returned minutes later looking for Calvin.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam told him Calvin had escaped through the loading dock.<\/p>\n<p>Then she left with Vane.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah asked, \u201cVoluntarily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was that sentence again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time I understood why it mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin remembered one more thing.<\/p>\n<p>Before Miriam left, she slipped something through the bars.<\/p>\n<p>A small flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agents now had it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s on it?\u201d Rebecca asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re reviewing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Briggs hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then added, \u201cOne folder is labeled ETHAN.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura Cole arrived at the federal office that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>I was asked to come too.<\/p>\n<p>So were Paul and Derek.<\/p>\n<p>Julian appeared without being invited and somehow nobody made him leave.<\/p>\n<p>We sat in a secure conference room while Briggs connected a laptop to a large monitor.<\/p>\n<p>The drive contained legal correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>Not ordinary correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>Drafts.<\/p>\n<p>Versions before edits.<\/p>\n<p>Messages that had never appeared in Apex\u2019s official archive.<\/p>\n<p>The first file concerned Ethan Cole\u2019s crash.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Vale had written to Miriam less than three hours after being notified that Ethan was dead.<\/p>\n<p>The message was short.<\/p>\n<p>Do not let preliminary maintenance speculation become the public narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Laura stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>A second message followed.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam had replied:<\/p>\n<p>Then preserve the underlying records and let engineering determine what happened.<\/p>\n<p>Martin answered:<\/p>\n<p>We need disciplined messaging before engineering creates exposure we cannot contain.<\/p>\n<p>Paul swore quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Laura did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked, \u201cDid Miriam cooperate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Briggs opened the next document.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently not at first.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam repeatedly instructed executives to preserve records.<\/p>\n<p>She warned that deleting maintenance complaints could constitute obstruction.<\/p>\n<p>She objected to blaming Ethan before mechanical analysis was complete.<\/p>\n<p>Then something changed.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks after the crash, her emails became cautious.<\/p>\n<p>Short.<\/p>\n<p>Noncommittal.<\/p>\n<p>Her objections disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Briggs opened another folder.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Not the ones from Vane\u2019s truck.<\/p>\n<p>Older ones.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam leaving her house.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam meeting her adult son.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam visiting her mother at an assisted-living facility.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s warning from the previous night returned to me.<\/p>\n<p>Do not decide she\u2019s guilty because she kept secrets.<\/p>\n<p>Vane had been watching her too.<\/p>\n<p>One photograph had a handwritten date.<\/p>\n<p>Four days after Miriam\u2019s final objection to Martin.<\/p>\n<p>Laura finally spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe threatened her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Briggs did not confirm it.<\/p>\n<p>She did not need to.<\/p>\n<p>The next file was an audio recording.<\/p>\n<p>Miriam\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Vane\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Vane said, \u201cYou can be counsel or you can be a crusader.
