was the first useful fact we received.

Pelvic fracture.

Broken ribs.

A head injury doctors believed was serious but not immediately life-threatening.

He had been walking along a service road near a motel when the pickup struck him.

The vehicle did not stop.

A delivery driver saw the impact and called emergency services.

The witness described a dark pickup.

Briggs did not need to say what everyone thought.

Vane’s vehicle was dark.

That proved nothing yet.

But it changed the investigation from corporate misconduct into something potentially violent.

Federal agents and local police placed protection outside Aaron’s hospital room.

Paul wanted to go immediately.

Briggs stopped him.

“You can visit when doctors allow it.”

“He’s my friend.”

“You spent the last two days arguing with walking toward the conference room.

The board chair entered with Miriam beside her.

She took one look at Briggs, Derek and the ledger.

Then she understood.

“You found it.”

Rebecca stared at her.

“You knew it existed.”

Eleanor closed the door.

“Yes.”

The admission came so easily that it made everyone angrier.

Rebecca stepped toward her.

“For two years?”

“Yes.”

“You met Derek.”

“Yes.”

“With Curtis Vane.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Eleanor looked at Derek.

“I made a mistake.”

Derek laughed.

“You’ll need something better.”

“I know.”

She sat.

Nobody else did.

Eleanor explained that Derek contacted the board anonymously after leaving Apex.

His message alleged maintenance records were being altered and drivers retaliated against.

She agreed to meet him personally.

“Why Vane?” Briggs asked.

“He was corporate security director.”

“Exactly.”

“At the time, I believed he could verify whether records had been improperly accessed.”

Derek said, “He tried to take my evidence.”

Eleanor nodded.

“I know.”

“You know now?”

“No.”

That stopped him.

“When?”

“The parking lot.”

Derek stared.

“You saw him follow me?”

“I saw him leave immediately after you.”

“And did nothing?”

“I called him.”

“What did he say?”

“That he was ensuring you weren’t meeting with competitors or attorneys.”

Derek laughed in disbelief.

“And you accepted that?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I told Martin.”

Every face changed.

Rebecca said, “You reported Vane to Martin.”

“Yes.”

“And Martin?”

“Said he would handle it.”

Derek shook his head.

“You gave the problem to the problem.”

Eleanor absorbed that.

“Yes.”

Briggs asked whether Eleanor had told anyone about the ledger.

“I told Martin Derek claimed to have evidence.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Calvin?”

“No.”

“Vane obviously knew.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever see the evidence?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Derek refused.”

Derek said, “Because you brought security.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor looked at him.

“You were right not to trust me.”

That silenced him briefly.

Rebecca asked what happened after the meeting.

Eleanor said Martin’s office reported that an internal audit found no systematic falsification.

Several maintenance edits were attributed to routine corrections.

Derek’s complaints were characterized as retaliation allegations arising from his employment dispute.

“And you believed it?” I asked.

Eleanor looked at me.

“Not completely.”

“Then what did you do?”

“I requested a board safety review.”

Briggs asked for records.

Eleanor said they existed.

The review had examined incident rates, regulatory findings and maintenance compliance.

Everything looked acceptable.

Rebecca understood.

“Because they reviewed the official system.”

“Yes.”

“Not the hidden revisions.”

“I didn’t know there was a hidden archive.”

Derek said, “I told you records were being changed.”

“And I should have pushed harder.”

“You think?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“No defense.”

She then admitted something worse.

After the review, Martin told her continued investigation risked undermining executive management and damaging customer confidence without evidence.

Eleanor let the matter drop.

“Why?” Laura would have asked.

I asked it for her.

“Why?”

Eleanor looked at me.

“Because the board had just refinanced Apex.”

Money.

Again.

A major lender had required stable safety metrics.

A broad investigation could have triggered additional scrutiny.

“So you chose not to know,” I said.

Eleanor’s expression tightened.

“That is fair.”

Miriam shifted uncomfortably.

Eleanor continued.

“I told myself we had conducted the review.”

“But you knew it wasn’t the evidence Derek offered.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Vane followed him.”

“Yes.”

“And now Vane may have run down Aaron Bell.”

Eleanor looked toward Briggs.

“Is Aaron alive?”

“Yes.”

Relief crossed her face.

I couldn’t tell whether that made me trust her more or less.

Briggs asked about Calvin’s recent payment to Vane.

Eleanor denied knowing anything.

“Would Martin?”

“Possibly.”

“Daniel?”

“Possibly.”

“Did Vane continue working informally for Apex after retirement?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“That depends on what you mean.”

Everyone groaned.

She clarified.

Vane’s consultancy had received occasional assignments involving cargo theft, fraud and employee misconduct.

“Who approved those contracts?”

“Usually legal or Martin’s office.”

Miriam said, “Not my department.”

Briggs requested every invoice.

Eleanor agreed.

Then Derek asked the question that mattered.

“Why should anyone believe you now?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“They shouldn’t.”

That answer surprised him.

“Trust is irrelevant. Records aren’t.”

She turned to Briggs.

“You will have every board record I control.”

“Even privileged material?”

Miriam immediately said, “Eleanor.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Counsel can identify legal limits. Nobody is destroying or hiding anything.”

Miriam nodded reluctantly.

Rebecca asked, “Are you staying board chair?”

“For now.”

“Should you?”

Eleanor considered.

“Probably not permanently.”

“Why stay now?”

“Because removing every person who understands the company at once may hurt employees who had nothing to do with this.”

Julian had made the same distinction.

Drivers should not pay for executives.

That was becoming harder as customers began suspending freight.

My phone buzzed.

Dispatch.

For the first time in days.

I answered.

A dispatcher named Melissa told me my regular route had been restored.

I almost laughed.

“Today?”

“If you want it.”

I looked around the room.

A federal investigation.

A hit-and-run.

A hidden ledger.

A board chair confessing failure.

And somewhere at the terminal, freight still needed moving.

“What route?”

“Cincinnati overnight.”

I thought of Sarah.

Then I thought of what normal work meant.

Driving had been my job before this mess.

It would still be my job afterward, if Apex survived.

“Equipment?”

“Fresh inspection.”

“By who?”

“Independent contractor under the new stand-down procedure.”

That mattered.

“Send me the report.”

“I already did.”

I opened it.

Detailed.

Tires.

Brakes.

Steering.

Air system.

Technician signature.

No vague language.

No internal override.

I felt something loosen.

“I’ll take it.”

Rebecca looked surprised.

“You’re driving tonight?”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

“Especially after everything.”

Eleanor watched me.

“Marcus, you don’t need to prove anything.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why?”

“Because this is my job.”

I looked at her.

“And because if the new safety process only exists on paper, I want to see it.”

Briggs almost smiled.

“You really cannot stop investigating.”

“I’m checking my truck.”

“Good distinction.”

Sarah was less amused when I told her.

“You’re driving tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’ve got the inspection.”

“From Apex?”

“Independent.”

“Marcus.”

“I need normal.”

That quieted her.

Finally she said, “Call before you leave.”

“I will.”

“And if anything feels wrong?”

“I stop.”

“No matter what dispatch says?”

I smiled.

“That lesson has been thoroughly reinforced.”

Before I left headquarters, Briggs asked me to identify Vane from an old employee photograph.

I had seen him at corporate events.

Tall.

Gray hair.

Heavy shoulders.

I could not connect him to the figure outside Derek’s house.

Derek looked at the photograph longer.

“That could be him.”

“Could?”

“I won’t say yes if I’m not sure.”

Briggs nodded approvingly.

Good witnesses resisted certainty when certainty wasn’t earned.

By five that afternoon, police had located Vane’s pickup.

Abandoned behind a closed factory.

Front-end damage.

Traces of blood on the passenger-side bumper.

The plate matched the rest-area vehicle.

Paul sat down when he heard.

“So Vane hit Aaron.”

Briggs corrected him.

“The vehicle appears to have hit Aaron.”

“Come on.”

“Evidence first.”

She was relentless about that.

I had begun to appreciate it.

No matter how ugly the pattern looked, she refused to turn suspicion into fact prematurely.

That was exactly what Apex had done to drivers in reverse.

Decided the story first.

Made the records fit later.

Before leaving, I saw Rebecca standing alone.

“You okay?”

She laughed softly.

“Apparently I earned bonuses from fake safety performance while my brother helped suppress complaints.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“Maybe.”

She looked at me.

“You’re not going to tell me I’m innocent?”

“No.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re also not Calvin.”

“That is an exceptionally low standard.”

“Been hearing that a lot lately.”

She almost smiled.

Then her expression became serious.

“Marcus, your route tonight.”

“What?”

“If you find anything wrong, stop.”

“I know.”

“I mean anything.”

“I know.”

“No supervisor can override the maintenance decision.”

“Rebecca.”

“What?”

“You sound like Sarah.”

“That seems like a compliment.”

“It is.”

I drove home first.

Ate with Sarah and Chloe.

Then Sarah followed me outside when I left.

She stood beside my car with her arms folded against the cold.

“You really want to do this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I searched for the answer.

“Because I don’t want them to make me afraid of the road.”

She nodded.

Then kissed me.

“Come home.”

“I will.”

At the terminal, the atmosphere had changed.

Drivers gathered in small groups.

Nobody trusted anyone.

Some supported the investigation.

Others worried Apex would collapse.

One driver blamed me.

“You had to make a federal case out of stopping for some family?”

I looked at him.

“I didn’t falsify maintenance records.”

“No, but this started with you.”

“No.”

Derek’s complaints started earlier.

Paul’s warning started earlier.

Ethan’s death.

Sam’s crash.

Ken’s tanker.

Eric’s ledger.

“This started long before me.”

The driver looked away.

I performed my pre-trip inspection more carefully than I ever had.

The tractor was clean.

Trailer secure.

Brakes responded normally.

No leaks.

No strange steering.

I checked everything twice.

Then a third time.

Finally I climbed into the cab.

Dispatch sent clearance.

I started toward Cincinnati.

For the first hour, nothing happened.

That felt extraordinary.

Highway lights.

Engine vibration.

Weather clear.

Freight behind me.

A job.

Then my phone rang through hands-free.

Rebecca.

“Marcus, where are you?”

“Interstate 71 south.”

“Pull over somewhere safe.”

Every muscle tightened.

“Why?”

“Just do it.”

I took the next rest area.

Parked.

“What happened?”

“Federal investigators searched Vane’s vehicle.”

“And?”

“They found a photograph.”

“Of
