repeatedly.

Victor.

Daniel.

Martin.

Curtis Vane.

Law firms.

Consultants.

Several mechanics.

Several drivers.

Then RS.

Rebecca’s initials.

Quarterly amounts.

Rebecca compared them with her compensation history.

Some matched.

Not exactly.

Close.

Briggs traced the source.

The payments were not secret cash transfers.

They were corporate performance-bonus allocations.

Legitimate in form.

Potentially corrupted by manipulated metrics.

Rebecca looked almost relieved.

Then she saw another entry.

RS — complaint suppression preserves regional index.

She stopped breathing for a second.

Derek said, “That’s the one I remembered.”

Rebecca looked at Briggs.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

“Who wrote it?”

“Eric.”

Paul leaned closer.

“His handwriting.”

Rebecca’s voice tightened.

“Was he accusing me?”

Derek answered.

“I don’t think so.”

“Why?”

“Because he marked people he thought were knowingly involved.”

“How?”

Derek pointed to symbols beside names.

A black triangle appeared beside Calvin.

Victor.

Daniel.

Vane.

Martin.

No triangle beside Rebecca.

“What does the triangle mean?”

“Eric called them decision people.”

Rebecca stared.

“So what was I?”

Derek turned several pages.

A notation key appeared near the back.

Triangle: directs/authorizes.

Circle: executes.

Square: affected/used.

Beside RS was a square.

Rebecca whispered, “Used.”

Derek nodded.

“Eric thought somebody was using your numbers or your authority.”

Briggs said, “That still requires verification.”

“Yes.”

But Rebecca’s shoulders loosened slightly.

Then Hart plugged the USB into an isolated forensic computer.

Folders appeared.

PAYMENTS.

MAINTENANCE.

INCIDENTS.

SECURITY.

BOARD.

Briggs opened BOARD.

Only one document was inside.

Meeting minutes from three years earlier.

Apex executive risk committee.

Martin Vale attended.

Daniel attended.

Calvin attended.

Curtis Vane attended.

Two board members.

And one name none of us expected.

Eleanor Grant.

The interim board chair who had looked Laura in the eye and promised Apex would correct the record even if it threatened the company.

Rebecca whispered, “Eleanor knew?”

Briggs opened the minutes.

The meeting discussed rising equipment downtime and “operator-driven safety interruptions.”

A proposal recommended central review of severe maintenance flags before equipment was removed from service.

Eleanor’s recorded comment appeared near the bottom.

Operational controls must not create incentives to conceal legitimate safety issues.

I exhaled.

Maybe she had objected.

Then we reached the next page.

Motion approved unanimously.

Including Eleanor.

The central review process that later became the override system had been authorized by the board committee.

Rebecca stared at the screen.

“They created it.”

Briggs corrected her.

“They created something.”

“Is there a difference?”

“Yes.”

The original policy required qualified maintenance review.

It did not authorize falsifying records.

It did not authorize retaliation.

It did not say drivers should be lied to.

But it created the mechanism.

A centralized override.

A doorway.

Calvin and others had apparently learned how to use it.

Then Derek pointed at a handwritten note in Eric’s ledger.

“Look.”

Beside the meeting date, Eric had written:

System legal. Use corrupted later.

Paul read it twice.

“So the policy wasn’t the conspiracy.”

“No,” Briggs said.

“The implementation may have become one.”

That mattered.

Not everyone who touched the system was equally responsible.

That distinction would become essential if we wanted truth instead of a mob.

Then Hart opened another file.

A scanned invoice.

Vane Risk Solutions.

Paid six days ago.

The client was not Apex.

Rebecca leaned closer.

“Who paid him?”

Hart enlarged the billing address.

A private holding company.

Briggs searched its registration.

The owner appeared.

Calvin Roarke.

So Calvin had hired Vane again.

Recently.

Before the scandal broke publicly.

Rebecca whispered, “He knew this was coming.”

Briggs looked toward Derek.

“Who knew you had the ledger?”

“Eric.”

“He’s dead.”

“Paul knew Eric gave me something.”

Paul stiffened.

“Not what.”

“Victor suspected.”

“Anyone else?”

Derek thought.

Then his expression changed.

“One person.”

“Who?”

“Eleanor Grant.”

Nobody spoke.

Rebecca stared.

“You told Eleanor?”

“Two years ago.”

“What?”

Derek nodded.

“After I left Apex, I wrote to the board.”

“About the ledger?”

“I told her I had records showing maintenance manipulation.”

“What did she do?”

“She asked me not to send anything electronically.”

Briggs leaned forward.

“Did you meet?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Hotel near Cincinnati.”

“Alone?”

“No.”

Derek swallowed.

“Curtis Vane came with her.”

The room changed instantly.

“What happened?” Briggs asked.

“Eleanor said she wanted to investigate quietly.”

“And Vane?”

“He wanted the records.”

“Did you give them?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Derek looked at the notebook.

“Because Eric told me never to give the only copy to anyone from Apex.”

Briggs asked what Eleanor did after he refused.

“She said she understood.”

“And Vane?”

Derek’s mouth tightened.

“He followed me home.”

Rebecca stood.

“You never reported this?”

“To who?”

Nobody answered.

Derek looked at the screen showing Eleanor’s name.

“She may be telling the truth now.”

“Do you believe that?”

“I believe she had two years to do something.”

The door opened.

Miriam entered.

She looked shaken.

“What happened?”

Rebecca turned the laptop toward her.

“Where is Eleanor?”

Miriam frowned.

“Board meeting.”

“Get her.”

“Why?”

Briggs stood.

“Because we need to ask why she met privately with a whistleblower and brought the same security director now connected to Aaron Bell’s disappearance.”

Miriam stared.

Before she could answer, Hart’s phone rang.

He listened.

His expression sharpened.

“They found Aaron.”

Paul stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“Where?”

Hart looked at Briggs.

“Hospital outside Toledo.”

“Is he hurt?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Hit by a vehicle.”

My stomach dropped.

“Accident?”

Hart shook his head.

“Witness says the vehicle mounted the shoulder.”

The room went silent.

Briggs was already moving.

“Condition?”

“Alive.”

Paul closed his eyes.

Hart added one more detail.

“Aaron told paramedics a name before they sedated him.”

“Whose?”

“Curtis Vane.”

<a
