truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat truck?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA tanker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDangerous cargo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months after your route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas it released under override?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it crash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Aaron said, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt rolled outside Lexington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered hearing about it.<\/p>\n<p>An Apex tanker had overturned.<\/p>\n<p>The fire burned for hours.<\/p>\n<p>The driver survived with severe burns.<\/p>\n<p>The official explanation was speed entering a curve.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe steering report was changed before dispatch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the driver?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKen Wallace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name from Rebecca\u2019s retaliation list.<\/p>\n<p>One of the drivers Victor had punished after safety complaints.<\/p>\n<p>I whispered, \u201cKen survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron\u2019s voice became smaller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped Eric copy the original inspection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why Calvin went to the warehouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>The critical-event files.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalvin knew federal investigators would find them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he take Ken\u2019s file?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I know where he took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron inhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Then he gave me an address.<\/p>\n<p>A cabin near Lake Erie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalvin keeps personal records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That word again.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone inside Apex seemed to keep evidence as protection from everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cTell Briggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling her next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why call me first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he said, \u201cBecause if something happens before tomorrow, I wanted one person outside management to know where the missing files are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah shook her head violently.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Do not make me your backup plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wrote the address down anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Then I said, \u201cCall the investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line went dead.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stared at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re giving that to Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Briggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you\u2019re not going there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phone rang again before I could send the address.<\/p>\n<p>This time it was Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Her first sentence made my stomach drop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron Bell just missed his scheduled check-in with federal investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the address in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave me a location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah grabbed my wrist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA cabin where Calvin keeps records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMarcus, do not go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo does Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sending you the address now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I texted it.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca confirmed receipt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll give it to Briggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron\u2019s wife just called investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left a note at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat note?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s voice
