message.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at Briggs.

“Calvin accessed an Apex storage facility at 5:38 this morning.”

“Which facility?”

“Westfield archive warehouse.”

Rebecca asked, “What’s stored there?”

Eleanor answered.

“Old paper maintenance files.”

Paul swore.

Briggs was already moving toward the door.

I stood too.

She looked at me.

“You stay here.”

“I wasn’t planning on following you.”

That was mostly true.

Briggs left with Hart.

Paul paced.

“What if he destroys the records?”

Julian said, “Federal investigators know where he is now.”

“If he’s still there.”

Rebecca pulled up the facility information.

The warehouse sat forty minutes away.

Miriam insisted nobody from Apex should interfere.

For once, everyone agreed.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

Sarah texted me.

Before nine.

I replied.

I remember.

Laura noticed.

“Your wife?”

“Yeah.”

“Go home when you can.”

“I will.”

“You say that like Ethan used to.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“Like work is a weather system you can’t control.”

That stayed with me.

Then Rebecca’s phone rang.

Briggs.

She put it on speaker.

“We reached the warehouse.”

Paul stepped closer.

“Is Calvin there?”

“No.”

“Records?”

Briggs paused.

“Some are gone.”

Miriam swore softly.

Rebecca asked, “Destroyed?”

“We found burn residue behind the building.”

My stomach tightened.

Briggs continued.

“But Calvin did not take everything.”

Paul asked, “What did he leave?”

“A locked cabinet.”

“Anything inside?”

“We opened it.”

Briggs’s voice changed.

“Original inspection forms.”

Rebecca gripped the table.

“For Ethan?”

“Yes.”

Paul closed his eyes.

“And others?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Hundreds.”

No one spoke.

Briggs continued.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Eric Nolan’s name appears on the cabinet inventory.”

Paul looked up.

Briggs said, “It looks like Eric collected original paper records before he died.”

Rebecca whispered, “He was building a case.”

“Possibly.”

Then Briggs added the detail that turned relief back into fear.

“One section of the cabinet is empty.”

Paul stared at the phone.

“What section?”

“Files marked CRITICAL EVENTS.”

Laura stood.

“What does that mean?”

“We don’t know.”

Rebecca asked, “Was Ethan’s file in that section?”

“No.”

“Sam?”

“No.”

“Then whose files were?”

Briggs looked at the inventory sheet.

“One name appears repeatedly.”

She paused.

“Aaron Bell.”

The mechanic who cleared my trailer.

I felt the old route come back again.

Cold highway.

Long grades.

A warning light I had trusted someone else to explain.

And somewhere, apparently, a set of records connected to the mechanic who sent me back onto the road had been important enough for someone to remove before federal investigators arrived.

Click here to continue reading: PART
