I looked him up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, the only sound in the office came from trucks outside.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel said, \u201cYou cannot meet him without counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll expose Apex to enormous liability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not representing Apex tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means I\u2019m going as the person Ethan emailed for help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never saw the email.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat won\u2019t matter to his widow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed harder than if he had shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca packed the copied files into an evidence envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Then she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou aren\u2019t responsible for any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou already risked your job once because you felt responsible for strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about Sarah\u2019s warning.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let angry people decide what you do next.<\/p>\n<p>This was not anger.<\/p>\n<p>Not entirely.<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cI\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel walked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, he stopped beside his sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe careful what you think truth will fix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe it isn\u2019t supposed to fix anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what\u2019s the point?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She held his gaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo stop making the lie worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>A man in a dark suit was standing outside.<\/p>\n<p>Not Apex security.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He showed Rebecca an identification card.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.<\/p>\n<p>Another agent stood behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat can I do for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agent looked past her at Victor, Daniel and the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received a complaint this morning regarding falsified maintenance records and possible retaliation against commercial drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked, \u201cWho filed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agent shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t disclose that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Paul.<\/p>\n<p>But Paul had sounded surprised by our investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Then the agent added one detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original complaint was submitted almost eleven months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven months.<\/p>\n<p>Right around the time Paul disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had already tried to expose Apex.<\/p>\n<p>And whoever they were had apparently been waiting almost a year for someone to listen.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30705\">Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Federal Investigators Arrived Before Apex Could Contain the Scandal, and Laura Cole Finally Heard What Her Husband Had Tried to Warn Them About<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rebecca asked Victor for every detail he remembered about Paul Sutter\u2019s call.
