Hayes Industrial received a load of electronic components from Apex. Some of the cargo was damaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor spoke immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat claim was investigated and closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo everyone believed,\u201d Julian said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the official paperwork, the trailer had arrived intact. Hayes Industrial employees signed for it, and the damage was discovered afterward.<\/p>\n<p>The loss had therefore been blamed on the receiving side.<\/p>\n<p>Victor nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegal found evidence suggesting otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat evidence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographs taken before delivery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Julian explained that the driver had stopped several hours earlier after reporting a mechanical problem. While stationary, he checked the load and photographed pallets that had shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca glanced at the list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was driving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I already knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek Mills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The highlighted words on Rebecca\u2019s sheet suddenly meant something much worse.<\/p>\n<p>BRAKE SAFETY COMPLAINT.<\/p>\n<p>Derek had been one of the safest drivers at Apex. He checked equipment carefully, rarely complained, and almost never missed a schedule without a reason.<\/p>\n<p>Then he disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Victor told us Derek had refused work.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca opened Derek\u2019s personnel file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe resigned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe refused an instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat instruction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat instruction?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rain had begun tapping against the office windows.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Victor answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe refused to continue driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe brake issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Julian described Derek\u2019s account.<\/p>\n<p>He had stopped at a service plaza after noticing overheating in the trailer brakes. He called dispatch and requested a mechanic.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca looked at Victor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you on dispatch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI may have taken the call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell him to continue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrivers report things constantly. Not every concern requires shutting down a truck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrakes do,\u201d Rebecca said.<\/p>\n<p>Victor insisted the equipment had passed its earlier inspection.<\/p>\n<p>The HR representative searched archived maintenance records.<\/p>\n<p>A minute later he found the report.<\/p>\n<p>Rear brake chamber failure.<\/p>\n<p>Severe overheating.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle removed from service until repaired.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew a mechanic placed that equipment out of service?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember every event from eight months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you remember Derek refusing you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked away.<\/p>\n<p>The repair took hours. Another tractor eventually completed the movement.<\/p>\n<p>During the delay, Derek inspected the trailer because the load had shifted during braking.<\/p>\n<p>He photographed damaged crates.<\/p>\n<p>Julian showed Rebecca copies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were taken before the warehouse received the shipment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey prove cargo was damaged. They don\u2019t prove how.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey prove my receiving employees weren\u2019t responsible for damage that already existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHayes Industrial absorbed almost ninety thousand dollars in losses. One warehouse supervisor was suspended because Apex insisted the cargo arrived intact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Victor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek had evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca asked the obvious question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Apex receive those photographs?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor said he couldn\u2019t remember.<\/p>\n<p>The HR representative searched Derek\u2019s archived email.<\/p>\n<p>Then he stopped typing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The message had been sent directly to Victor the morning after the delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Attachments included.<\/p>\n<p>Victor went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca read further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian watched her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca turned the screen toward Victor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to read your own words?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>She paraphrased the message for the room.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had instructed Derek to remove the photographs from consideration because the customer had already accepted the shipment and the matter would not be reopened.<\/p>\n<p>Julian stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou suppressed evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re twisting what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat interpretation makes that acceptable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe claim process was already underway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA claim blaming my employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was protecting Apex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were protecting yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reconstructed the sequence.<\/p>\n<p>Derek reported brakes.<\/p>\n<p>Victor told him to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Derek refused.<\/p>\n<p>A mechanic confirmed a serious failure.<\/p>\n<p>The load had shifted and suffered damage.<\/p>\n<p>If corporate examined everything, the first question would have been why dispatch had pressured a driver to move unsafe equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had a reason to make Derek look unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>Just as he had a reason to make me look unreliable.<\/p>\n<p>Julian\u2019s phone vibrated again.<\/p>\n<p>He read another message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek kept the photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s how your attorneys got them,\u201d Rebecca said.<\/p>\n<p>Julian shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s head lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecording of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dispatch call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor moved abruptly toward the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis meeting is finished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The HR representative stood.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca blocked Victor\u2019s path.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is going anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor argued that the recording might be legally unusable.<\/p>\n<p>Julian agreed that attorneys would decide admissibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Derek says he recorded the call for a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat reason?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t the first time he believed Victor had pressured a driver to ignore a safety concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every person in the office looked at Rebecca\u2019s list.<\/p>\n<p>She touched another name.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Price.<\/p>\n<p>Sam had left after a tire blowout on Interstate 75. Victor told us Sam had failed to inspect his truck properly.<\/p>\n<p>Julian checked the information from Derek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe mentioned Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca chose another name.<\/p>\n<p>Luis Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p>Julian nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Wallace.<\/p>\n<p>Again, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Victor stepped away from the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re turning this into a witch hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s answer came immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. An investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in Victor changed.<\/p>\n<p>The fear disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>A thin smile replaced it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think this ends with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca frowned.<\/p>\n<p>Victor sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I invented delivery targets? You think I decided what on-time percentage each terminal had to hit? You think I created the penalties?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour decisions are your responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know exactly what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked around the office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I didn\u2019t build this system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Victor noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorporate wanted trucks moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat does not excuse you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking for an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened a desk drawer.<\/p>\n<p>The HR representative moved forward.<\/p>\n<p>Victor raised his empty hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed a small black flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>Then he placed it on the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody liked that answer.<\/p>\n<p>Victor said he had saved emails, spreadsheets, screenshots and other internal records for three years.<\/p>\n<p>Julian crossed his arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would you need insurance against your own employer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause when executives give questionable instructions, they rarely volunteer to share the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s voice became cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew those instructions were questionable and followed them anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had twenty-seven years in this company. A mortgage. Two children in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn\u2019t remain silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did the people whose paychecks you cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I enjoyed doing that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou threatened my job because I stopped beside a stranded child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou caused a service problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI caused a delay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The distinction hung between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem came afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor looked away.<\/p>\n<p>The HR representative asked Rebecca whether she wanted the drive examined.<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Victor leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to know why drivers were pressured, open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca didn\u2019t touch it.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to know why safety complaints became disciplinary issues, open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to know why Marcus lost forty percent of his work, open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca finally picked up the drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gave those orders?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor smiled without warmth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone considerably higher than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s eyes stayed on her.<\/p>\n<p>When he answered, Rebecca\u2019s face lost its color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Sloan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I didn\u2019t understand why that name affected her so strongly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Victor supplied the detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExecutive Vice President of Operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca whispered the relationship before anyone else could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30701\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Rebecca Opened Victor\u2019s Secret Files and Found Her Brother\u2019s Approval Attached to Decisions That Had Already Put Drivers in Danger<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Julian remained beside Victor\u2019s desk, reading the message from his legal department.
