Daniel arrived.

Police had cleared the restaurant before his vehicle stopped at the curb.

Rain had started again.

Not heavy.

A thin October rain that turned the pavement black and made the restaurant windows reflect the city.

Daniel paused outside.

Two days earlier, he had walked through those doors with Sophie expecting dinner.

He had worried about discriminatory seating complaints.

He had believed Vanessa Cole might be the worst problem waiting inside.

Now armed officers stood where hosts once greeted customers.

Marcus Reed met him near the bar.

“No Rebecca.”

“Nathan?”

“Not no.

That answer still mattered.

Marcus noticed him looking.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good enough.”

They crossed the dining room.

Maria’s station remained exactly as staff had left it.

A folded napkin sat beside a tray.

Daniel thought of her being sent home for defending a father and daughter.

Small cruelty.

Visible cruelty.

The kind companies learned to tolerate while executives focused on larger numbers.

Maybe none of this would have surfaced if Vanessa had simply treated them decently.

Daniel almost laughed at the absurdity.

A secret network spanning generations had begun unraveling because one manager wanted a casually dressed father moved from a booth.

Marcus opened the wine-room door.

Behind a shelving unit, officers had exposed a narrow staircase.

Stone steps descended beneath the building.

Daniel smelled damp earth and old cork.

“How old?”

Marcus answered, “Original foundation.”

They descended.

At the bottom stood an iron door.

Open.

Beyond it was a cellar.

Brick arches.

Empty wine racks.

A long wooden table.

Rebecca stood at one end.

Nathan approached.

“Step away from the book.”

Nathan placed one hand on it.

“No.”

Rebecca said, “Take your hand off it.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You still think it belongs to you.”

“It belongs to evidence.”

“You sound like Daniel.”

“I’ll survive the insult.”

Daniel reached the table.

Up close, Rebecca looked older than her voice suggested.

Seventy.

Perhaps slightly younger than Nathan.

Silver hair pulled back.

Dark coat.

No jewelry except a narrow ring.

Her eyes resembled Edward’s.

That disturbed Daniel more than expected.

She studied him with equal intensity.

“You have Anna’s expression when you’re angry.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to talk about her like you knew her.”

“I did know her.”

“You targeted her.”

“Yes.”

The directness remained unsettling.

Nathan said, “Rebecca always mistakes confession for morality.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“And Nathan mistakes denial for innocence.”

Daniel put both palms on the table.

“Enough.”

Both siblings stopped.

It was almost funny.

He sounded like the youngest person at a disastrous family dinner.

“Anna’s page.”

Rebecca pointed toward the ledger.

“Inside.”

Nathan’s hand remained on the cover.

Daniel looked at him.

“Move.”

“No.”

Marcus Reed stepped forward.

Nathan smiled bitterly.

“You’ll have your security man arrest me?”

“If necessary.”

“For touching a book I helped create?”

“For conspiracy surrounding Anna’s death, financial crimes, and whatever police add after they finish reading her archive.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

“The archive.”

“Releasing now.”

“How much?”

“Last I saw, forty-eight percent.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Rebecca smiled faintly.

“You lost.”

Nathan looked at her.

“So did you.”

“Yes.”

Daniel noticed she did not resist that.

Nathan did.

He looked at Daniel.

“If that archive finishes, Continuity’s protection agreements collapse.”

“Good.”

“People will come after Rebecca.”

Rebecca said, “They already do.”

“After Edward.”

Daniel answered, “He can hire a lawyer.”

Nathan stared.

“You really mean to let your father face prosecution.”

“If evidence supports it.”

Nathan laughed softly.

“Our father would have hated you.”

Daniel looked at the ledger.

“I’m increasingly comfortable with that.”

Nathan finally removed his hand.

Daniel opened the book.

Old signatures filled the first pages.

Mercer Shipping.

Early Hartwell participants.

Private capital commitments.

Judges.

Business owners.

Political figures.

Some names he recognized.

Most he did not.

Rebecca said, “Keep going.”

Daniel turned pages.

Decades of hidden architecture.

Then newer inserts.

Meridian.

Continuity.

Cross-references.

Finally an envelope.

DANIEL.

Anna’s handwriting.

His fingers stopped.

Nathan leaned closer.

Rebecca stepped back.

Daniel looked at both.

“Leave.”

Nathan frowned.

Rebecca immediately turned toward the far wall.

Nathan said, “Daniel—”

“Leave.”

“This concerns us.”

“The envelope does not.”

Marcus Reed approached Nathan.

Nathan stared at Daniel for several seconds.

Then moved away.

Rebecca remained facing the wall.

Daniel opened the envelope.

One sheet.

Anna’s handwriting.

Daniel—

If you found this, then you found the founder ledger, which means at least one Mercer has finally stopped pretending the family’s secrets are safer than the truth.

He swallowed.

She continued:

I could destroy parts of this system now.

I am choosing not to.

Not because it deserves protection.

Because if I trigger everything immediately, the people responsible will bury what remains and build another version.

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

She did not turn.

Anna had understood the danger of exposing only half the structure.

The letter continued:

The system has to be made visible before it can be dismantled.

That requires someone with enough authority to open it and enough stubbornness not to inherit it.

He almost smiled.

That sounds like you, unfortunately.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

Anna’s voice existed in every line.

Then:

There is one thing I have not told anyone.

Not Edward.

Not Claire.

Not Richard.

Not Rebecca.

Daniel looked up.

Rebecca had turned slightly.

He continued reading.

Rebecca contacted me six months before the crash.

Daniel’s eyes moved toward her.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“You said you knew Anna.”

“Yes.”

“You were communicating.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she asked me not to.”

Daniel looked back at the page.

Anna wrote:

She told me Continuity had become something she could no longer control.

She wanted out.

Daniel stared at Rebecca.

Nathan laughed from across the cellar.

“Liar.”

Rebecca turned.

“Be quiet.”

Daniel continued.

Rebecca gave me evidence against Cross and Nathan.

She also admitted authorizing surveillance of our family.

I told her I would expose her with everyone else.

She said she understood.

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“You knew Anna planned to expose you.”

“Yes.”

“And you still gave her evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Rebecca looked toward Nathan.

“Because Julian was becoming him.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“My son?”

“Your instrument.”

“He was never yours to judge.”

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“You hid him his entire life and call that fatherhood?”

Nathan stepped toward her.

Marcus blocked him.

Daniel read on.

Anna:

Rebecca says she did not order physical harm against Emma.

I cannot prove that yet.

I can prove she allowed the experiment to continue after learning Cross had manipulated treatment schedules.

Daniel’s gaze lifted.

Rebecca did not look away.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Emma was nine.”

“I know.”

“You could have stopped it.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Rebecca’s composure cracked for the first time.

“Because stopping it would have exposed me before I had control.”

Daniel stared.

There it was.

The same answer in different clothes.

Control first.

People later.

Rebecca whispered, “I told myself I would fix it.”

Thomas had probably told himself similar things.

Edward too.

Richard.

Everyone.

Daniel looked back at Anna’s letter.

Do not let Rebecca convince you regret is the same as innocence.

Rebecca closed her eyes as if she knew the line.

Daniel continued.

But do not let Nathan convince you she is the architect of everything either.

Nathan’s expression changed.

Anna had separated guilt again.

Precisely.

Rebecca built Continuity into a weapon.

Nathan used it for succession.

Cross used it for murder.

Edward used Meridian to fight them and harmed people while doing it.

Hartwell used all of them.

Nobody is clean.

That does not mean everybody is guilty of the same thing.

Daniel breathed slowly.

That was the distinction he had been chasing since Vanessa called security.

Different wrongs.

Different responsibility.

Not one grand villain absolving everyone else.

The final section was shorter.

If I die, Daniel, protect Sophie from one idea above all others:

That our family’s survival is more important than other people’s lives.

It isn’t.

Neither is Bellmont.

Neither is the Mercer name.

He stopped reading.

Rain tapped faintly through street grates overhead.

Anna’s final sentence:

If saving the company requires becoming these people, let the company die.

Daniel folded the letter.

Nathan stared at him.

“What did she say?”

Daniel placed it inside his coat.

“None of your business.”

Nathan’s face tightened.

Rebecca almost smiled.

Daniel closed the ledger.

“This goes to investigators.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“No.”

Marcus Reed moved.

Nathan stopped.

Rebecca said quietly, “Let it go.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You’ve wanted this book for forty years.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Anna was right.”

Nathan laughed.

“About what?”

Rebecca’s eyes remained on Daniel.

“That the structure should die.”

Nathan’s face twisted.

“You hypocrite.”

“Yes.”

The answer silenced him.

Rebecca continued.

“I spent fifty years believing control would make what happened to me impossible.”

Her voice lowered.

“Instead I recreated the room.”

Daniel thought of Hawthorne.

Emma.

Anna.

Sophie’s file.

Hundreds of families reduced to behavioral models.

Rebecca had escaped a cage and then built one large enough to hold everyone.

Nathan said, “Don’t perform repentance now.”

“I’m not asking forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“I’m surrendering.”

Daniel stared.

Nathan did too.

Rebecca reached inside her coat slowly.

Marcus Reed tensed.

She removed a small drive.

“Continuity master index.”

Daniel looked at it.

“Everything?”

“Everything I still control.”

Nathan lunged.

Marcus caught him.

Rebecca placed the drive on the table.

Nathan struggled.

“You idiot.”

Rebecca watched him.

“No, Nathan.”

Her expression became tired.

“I’m finally nineteen again.”

Nathan stopped.

Rebecca continued.

“And I’m telling someone what Father did.”

Police entered the cellar.

Rebecca raised her hands.

Daniel watched officers approach.

Then a shot cracked.

Everyone ducked.

Rebecca jerked backward.

Daniel saw blood appear near her shoulder.

Marcus Reed pulled Daniel behind the stone arch.

Police shouted.

Nathan dropped to the floor.

Another shot struck brick.

From the staircase.

A man ran.

Marcus fired once.

The figure disappeared upward.

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

She was conscious.

Bleeding.

“Who?”

Rebecca grimaced.

“I don’t know.”

Nathan stared toward the stairs.

Then his face changed.

Daniel saw recognition.

“You know.”

Nathan shook his head.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

“Who?”

Nathan whispered:

“Gregory.”

Daniel froze.

Gregory Shaw.

The man who had begun disappearing records before any of them understood Meridian.

The man who had carried Edward’s founder case.

The man who had access to the key used to authorize Cross.

Nathan stared toward the staircase.

“He isn’t running from police.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“Then why shoot Rebecca?”

Nathan looked at the ledger.

“To keep us from learning who he actually works for.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 27:
