frowned.

“Who was he following?”

Rebecca paused.

“Nathan.”

Silence.

Daniel felt the old maze reopen.

Edward whispered, “No.”

Rebecca continued.

“Nathan offered Cross control of Continuity if Anna disappeared.”

Daniel stared.

“Nathan ordered the fatal sabotage.”

“Yes.”

Edward stood.

“That’s a lie.”

Rebecca’s tone sharpened.

“Then ask him why he disappeared after Anna died.”

“He disappeared years before.”

“Not Nathan.”

Rebecca’s voice lowered.

“Cross.”

Daniel thought of Nathan at the airfield.

His calm.

His claim that Rebecca stole Continuity.

His fear when she called.

Maybe fear of being exposed.

Daniel said, “Proof.”

Rebecca answered:

“Bottom of Nathan’s file.”

Daniel opened it.

A recent insert.

Encrypted payment schedules.

Cross.

Dates.

One transfer the night before Anna died.

Authorization:

N.M.

Nathan Mercer.

Daniel stared.

Edward whispered, “Oh God.”

Then the speaker clicked.

Rebecca said:

“Nathan did not want Anna dead because of Hartwell.”

Daniel looked up.

“He wanted her dead because she found out who he really was.”

“What does that mean?”

A door slammed somewhere in the corridor.

Footsteps.

Daniel turned.

Marcus Reed’s voice shouted from downstairs.

“Daniel!”

Gunfire cracked.

Edward dropped instinctively.

Daniel moved toward the doorway.

Marcus appeared at the far end of the hall.

“Get down!”

Another shot.

Plaster exploded near the doorframe.

Daniel pulled Edward into the room.

Richard shouted somewhere below.

Rebecca’s speaker remained live.

Her voice calm amid the chaos.

“Nathan has been listening.”

Daniel stared at the ceiling.

“He’s here?”

“No.”

Rebecca paused.

“But his people are.”

Another shot.

Marcus returned fire.

Daniel grabbed the metal case.

Edward shouted, “Leave it.”

“No.”

“These records are why they came.”

“Exactly.”

Rebecca’s voice continued.

“Take the file.”

Daniel looked at the red folder.

“Nathan cannot allow you to read the last page.”

Daniel opened it.

A genealogy chart.

Mercer family.

Nathan’s branch.

No children listed.

Then a sealed amendment.

Daniel tore it open.

One name appeared.

JULIAN CROSS.

Relationship:

Biological son of Nathan Mercer.

Daniel stared.

Cross was not merely Nathan’s operative.

He was his son.

Anna had discovered that Continuity, the sabotage, and the hidden research all converged inside another father protecting his own line.

A bullet struck the doorframe.

Edward shouted:

“Move!”

Daniel grabbed Nathan’s file.

And ran.
