looked toward the runway.

“Rebecca never forgave us.”

“She shouldn’t have.”

Edward looked at Daniel.

“I know.”

Daniel studied his father.

For once, there was no defense.

No strategy.

No explanation.

Only shame.

Daniel picked up the folder.

“We go.”

Marcus Reed stepped closer.

“Police?”

“At distance.”

Nathan said, “Rebecca will detect them.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then give them something to detect.”

Richard understood.

“A visible convoy.”

Daniel nodded.

“And another route.”

Marcus started planning immediately.

Edward moved toward the car.

Daniel stopped him.

“One thing first.”

Edward turned.

“If Rebecca tells me you ordered anything that harmed Anna and I find proof she’s right, I will not protect you because you’re my father.”

Edward nodded.

“I would expect nothing else.”

Daniel stared.

“That’s exactly the problem.”

They left the airfield twelve minutes later.

Daniel rode in the rear of an unmarked SUV with Edward beside him.

No one spoke for the first several miles.

Finally Edward said, “I loved Anna.”

Daniel looked out the window.

“She knew.”

Edward swallowed.

“She was furious with me.”

“She should have been.”

“Yes.”

“She still wanted to save you.”

Edward looked down.

“That was Anna.”

Daniel felt grief move through him in a quieter way than before.

Not the violent grief of the crash.

Something older.

More precise.

“She wanted you to stand beside me.”

Edward nodded.

“I read that letter once.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“You read it?”

“A copy.”

“Of course.”

“I didn’t know she put the original in the bank.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“She knew you too.”

Edward accepted that.

The conference center appeared ahead.

Abandoned parking lot.

Dark windows.

One light over the entrance.

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Rebecca.

LEAVE THE OTHERS.

BRING EDWARD.

Daniel looked at Marcus Reed driving.

“Stop here.”

Marcus did.

Richard’s vehicle stopped behind.

Daniel got out.

Edward followed.

No folder.

Daniel had left it under the seat.

His phone buzzed again.

THE DOCUMENTS.

Daniel typed:

CLAIRE FIRST.

Rebecca responded:

LOBBY.

Daniel and Edward entered.

The old conference center smelled of carpet dust and stale air.

A single chair sat in the middle of the lobby.

Claire was tied to it.

Alone.

Daniel ran toward her.

Edward scanned the room.

“Claire.”

Her eyes opened.

“Daniel.”

He cut the ties with a knife from the reception desk.

“Where’s Cross?”

“Gone.”

“Rebecca?”

Claire shook her head.

“Never here.”

Daniel looked around.

Of course.

Relay.

Claire gripped his arm.

“Listen.”

“What?”

“She wants Edward.”

Daniel glanced toward his father.

“She already has him.”

“No.”

Claire’s face tightened.

“She wants him to go where Nathan won’t.”

Edward went pale.

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?”

Claire looked at Edward.

“You know.”

Edward closed his eyes.

Daniel’s patience snapped.

“Where?”

Edward whispered:

“The institution.”

The same place Rebecca had been confined.

Daniel stared.

Claire said:

“That is where she started Continuity.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed again.

New coordinates.

An old psychiatric hospital two counties away.

Then a message:

BRING MY BROTHER BACK TO THE ROOM WHERE HE LEFT ME.
