frighten Anna?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

Every person around Daniel froze.

His heartbeat became loud in his ears.

“Did you order Renner to damage her brakes?”

“I authorized pressure.”

“That is not an answer.”

“I did not authorize her death.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“You authorized someone to tamper with a car carrying my wife.”

“I authorized a warning designed to stop her investigation.”

“And she died.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity of it nearly broke his control.

“Why Anna?”

“Because she found me.”

Daniel stared.

“She found your identity.”

“Yes.”

“What did she intend to do?”

“Expose everything.”

“Good.”

Rebecca laughed softly.

“You sound like her.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Where is Cross?”

“With me.”

“Where?”

“You’ll know soon.”

“Why call now?”

“Because the family has finally assembled.”

Daniel looked around.

Edward.

Nathan.

Thomas.

Claire.

The surviving branches of a family built on secrets.

Rebecca continued.

“And because Meridian is ready.”

“For what?”

“To transfer Bellmont.”

Daniel looked at Nathan.

He appeared horrified.

Rebecca continued.

“All these years, my brothers believed they were fighting over a company.”

Edward whispered, “Rebecca, don’t.”

She ignored him.

“They never understood Bellmont was only the key.”

Daniel’s pulse quickened.

“The key to what?”

“To every company Hartwell ever touched.”

Silence.

Daniel looked at Richard.

He understood first.

“The custodian network.”

Rebecca heard.

“Exactly.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Marcus Whitmore has the custodian credentials.”

“Not anymore.”

Daniel froze.

“What did you do to Marcus?”

“Nothing.”

A pause.

“He gave them to me.”

Daniel stared.

Marcus Whitmore had not disappeared because he was fleeing.

He had gone to Rebecca.

“Why?”

“Because unlike my brothers, Marcus understands when a structure has reached the end of its useful life.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“What do you need from me?”

“Your signature.”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard the offer.”

“I don’t need to.”

“You will.”

Daniel looked at Sophie’s trust documents under his arm.

Rebecca continued.

“And Daniel?”

“What?”

“Do not blame Paul Renner for the decision that killed Anna.”

Daniel looked at Renner.

His face tightened.

Rebecca said:

“He damaged the line exactly as instructed.”

Daniel felt cold.

“Then why did it fail early?”

Silence.

Renner stared.

Rebecca continued.

“Because someone damaged it again after Paul left.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Renner whispered, “What?”

Rebecca’s voice remained calm.

“Paul created a leak intended to frighten her.”

Daniel’s thoughts raced.

Claire’s 2:09 photographs showed the line intact.

That meant Renner’s first interference may have happened later.

Or another intervention followed.

Rebecca continued.

“The fatal cut was made at 6:52 that morning.”

Daniel felt the world narrow.

“Who?”

Rebecca paused.

“The person who knew Anna had decided to drive anyway.”

Daniel stared at Edward.

At Nathan.

Thomas.

Claire.

Renner.

Richard.

Who knew at 6:52?

Rebecca gave him the final piece.

“Ask your father where he was at 6:52.”

The call ended.

Daniel slowly turned toward Edward.

His father looked shattered.

“Dad.”

Edward said nothing.

“Where were you?”

Edward’s eyes filled.

“At your house.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

<a
