He knew which floorboard near the back staircase squeaked, where the old dumbwaiter shaft had been sealed, and which basement corridor always smelled faintly of oranges because produce deliveries once came through it.

He had never known about a vault.

Thomas led them down a service stair beneath the old wine cellar.

Marcus Reed came armed.

Richard carried a flashlight.

Daniel carried Margaret’s access card.

Eleanor had insisted on joining them after hearing the words Meridian Fourteen.

Daniel allowed it because fear was becoming useful evidence.

The lower corridor ended behind a shelving unit bolted to the wall.

Thomas moved several cases of bottled water.

A narrow metal door first pages contained dates.

Names.

Questions.

Later entries became more urgent.

Eleanor knows more than she says.

Gregory is weak, not central.

Thomas is compromised by loyalty to Edward.

Richard is afraid of exposure.

Marcus believes he can control Hartwell from inside.

Daniel read silently.

Then another entry:

Edward is alive.

I wish I had never proved it.

Daniel stared until the letters blurred.

He turned the page.

Edward says Daniel must not know because Hartwell watches him more closely than anyone.

He believes ignorance protects Daniel.

I told him ignorance is another form of captivity.

Daniel stopped.

That was Anna.

He could hear her voice in the sentence.

Another entry.

Edward asked me to leave this alone.

I I expose him, Hartwell destroys him.

If I stay silent, Marcus can control Bellmont.

If Edward takes it, we return to the same mistake: one man deciding everyone else’s pages concerned the car.

Seat moved.

Brake warning.

Tracker found.

Thomas checked undercarriage.

Margaret drove me home.

Someone returned vehicle before dawn.

Then one sentence.

Dad says leave the car untouched and let them think I will drive it.

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Richard leaned
