take the compromised vehicle that night.

Someone else removed it.

By morning, the car was back at Daniel and Anna’s house.

Anna then drove it.

“Who returned the car?”

No one answered.

Daniel looked toward Richard.

“Find every camera between the garage and my old house.”

“Three years later?”

“Find what exists.”

Margaret whispered, “There’s more.”

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

There was always more.

“What?”

“When I dropped Anna off, she asked whether I still had Dad’s old garage remote.”

Daniel frowned.

“What garage remote?”

“For your house.”

“I changed that system years ago.”

“After she died.”

Daniel remembered.

They had replaced the opener during renovations the following winter.

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Where was it?”

“In my glove compartment.”

“Did Anna take it?”

“No.”

“Then why ask?”

“She said someone had entered your garage without forcing the door.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

The altered seat.

The strange smell.

The brake warning.

If someone could enter the house garage without damage, they could return the car during the night.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Who had old remotes?”

Richard said, “Family, probably.”

Margaret nodded.

“Thomas had one.”

Daniel waited.

“Edward had one.”

A dead man’s remote.

Daniel felt sick.

“Anyone else?”

“Claire may have had one years ago.”

“What about Gregory?”

“No.”

“Eleanor?”

“I don’t think so.”

Richard asked, “Could an old remote be cloned?”

Marcus Reed answered from the doorway.

“Yes.”

Daniel had not heard him enter.

Marcus continued.

“If someone had access to one long enough.”

Daniel looked at the access card.

Cloned credentials.

Forwarded numbers.

Stolen logins.

Every system in their lives had been treated like something transferable.

A new message buzzed on Daniel’s phone.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

STOP LOOKING AT THE CARD.

Below that:

LOOK AT THE HANDWRITING.

Daniel turned the card over.

M-14.

Black ink.

He had assumed it was a storage code.

Margaret stared.

“I didn’t write that.”

Daniel looked closer.

The lettering was compressed, precise.

Anna’s handwriting was narrow and slanted.

This was blockier.

Familiar.

Richard saw it.

“What?”

Daniel’s memory supplied the answer.

Edward labeled everything.

Old wine bottles.

Basement boxes.

Accounting binders.

His handwriting always used a long downward stroke on the number four.

Exactly like this one.

Daniel stared at the card.

“Dad wrote this.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Richard frowned.

“M-14 could be anything.”

Daniel thought.

Edward loved coded references.

Meridian.

Trust structures.

Archive labels.

Then Thomas’s voice came from the hallway.

“It means Meridian fourteen.”

Everyone turned.

Thomas stood beside Marcus Reed.

Daniel rose.

“What is Meridian Fourteen?”

Thomas looked at the card.

“A storage vault.”

“Where?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Under the original Bellmont building.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You knew there was a vault.”

“I knew Edward created one.”

“What did he keep there?”

“I never saw inside.”

“Who could access it?”

“Edward.”

Daniel held up the card.

“And Anna had the key.”

Thomas looked shaken.

“Apparently.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is in Meridian Fourteen?”

Thomas whispered:

“The records Edward was willing to fake his death to protect.”

<a
