myself.”

That sounded exactly like Anna.

Marcus placed the envelope on the desk.

“I never opened it.”

Daniel looked at the unbroken seal.

For the first time all day, he believed something immediately.

Anna had sealed it.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was one page.

Daniel—

If you are reading this, I ran out of time.

He stopped.

Then continued.

I thought M.W. altered the car because he had motive, access, and enough arrogance to believe he could control the consequences.

I was wrong.

Daniel’s heartbeat changed.

The next lines were written more heavily, as though Anna’s hand had been shaking.

I saw the garage maintenance log.

The brake access occurred before Marcus arrived.

The person who used the service bay entered with a Mercer family credential.

Daniel looked up.

Thomas whispered, “No.”

Daniel returned to the page.

There were only two active Mercer family credentials that night.

Mine.

And Margaret’s.

Daniel stopped breathing.

He read it again.

His mother’s name seemed to rise from the paper.

The final line was underlined twice.

Do not accuse her until you understand why.

Daniel stared at the words.

His phone rang.

Margaret.

No one moved.

Daniel answered.

“Mom.”

She was crying.

“Daniel, I need you to come back.”

His voice barely worked.

“Why?”

A pause.

Then:

“Because Sophie found something in my purse.”

Daniel looked at Anna’s note.

“What?”

Margaret whispered:

“The old garage access card.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Garage Access Card
