New York for three days around David\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t eliminate planning,\u201d Kenneth said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Morales got another call.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas\u2019s location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOld office suite owned by Black Pike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow far?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTactical?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s deadline still had seventeen minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe expects us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he may already know police traced him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;ll move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morales nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone chimed.<\/p>\n<p>A new photograph.<\/p>\n<p>This one did not show Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>It showed a photocopy of my father\u2019s death certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Across it Thomas had written:<\/p>\n<p>ASK WHY MERCER KEPT THIS FOR FOURTEEN YEARS.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Mercer\u2019s recovered records.<\/p>\n<p>Why would Charles Mercer possess my father\u2019s death certificate?<\/p>\n<p>That was not proof of murder.<\/p>\n<p>But it was strange.<\/p>\n<p>Morales called the tactical team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch for documents before entry if visible.
