ribs.

“What happened?”

Morales ended the call.

“Thomas escaped custody during a diagnostic transfer.”

“How?”

“Someone triggered a fire alarm.”

“Did he have help?”

“Almost certainly.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

Rebecca stood.

“Claire is in custody.”

“Raymond too.”

“Then who is left?”

Nobody answered.

I thought of the original operation.

Red Marsh.

Rebecca.

Claire.

Raymond.

Thomas.

Mercer.

All accounted for.

Then I remembered the old trust board.

People who had profited from Walter Sr.’s structure.

People whose names had not yet become central.

“Thomas may not be running anymore,” I said.

Morales looked at me.

“What?”

“He kept Mercer alive to testify.”

“Yes.”

“He wanted the truth public.”

“Yes.”

“He already got the files.”

“Some.”

“So why escape?”

Connor answered from the monitor.

“Because he hasn't finished.”

My phone chimed.

Unknown number.

A single photograph appeared.

It showed the hospital hallway outside Connor’s room.

Taken seconds earlier.

Connor saw my face.

“What?”

I turned the screen toward Morales.

Then another message arrived.

This was never about killing him.

A second line appeared.

It was about making him look at the man who taught us all how to lie.

Walter stared at the message.

“I don't understand.”

Connor did.

His face changed completely.

“No.”

“What?” I asked.

He tried to get out of bed.

The officer stopped him.

“Connor.”

“No.”

“Who is he talking about?”

Connor stared toward the hospital-room door.

“My grandfather.”

Walter looked furious.

“My father is dead.”

Connor shook his head.

“Not him.”

“Then who?”

Connor’s voice dropped.

“The other grandfather.”

Nobody moved.

I felt the answer approaching before he said it.

Michael was Connor’s biological father.

Michael had married years before his death.

His wife’s father had served the Fleming organization for decades.

A man almost nobody had mentioned because everyone had been looking only at the Fleming name.

Connor whispered:

“Charles Mercer isn't just the old CFO.”

Walter went pale.

Connor looked directly at me.

“He was Michael’s father-in-law.”

The pieces shifted.

Mercer had not been merely an employee near the original trust.

He had been family to Michael.

Connected to Connor by the biological line nobody acknowledged.

And Thomas had just spent three days alone with him.

My phone chimed again.

This time the message contained an address.

Then:

Bring Walter.

Bring Connor.

Bring the Sinclair records.

No police if you want Mercer alive long enough to tell you why David Sinclair really died.

I stared at the words.

My father’s letter had warned me explicitly not to turn his natural death into a theory.

Thomas knew that.

Which meant he was either trying to manipulate me—

or he had found something my father himself never knew.

<a
