an appreciation for procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo have I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had changed careers.<\/p>\n<p>That surprised me more than almost anything.<\/p>\n<p>He left the investment firm connected indirectly to Leland\u2019s old network.<\/p>\n<p>Started working for a small manufacturing company.<\/p>\n<p>Operations.<\/p>\n<p>No client money.<\/p>\n<p>No complicated wealth structures.<\/p>\n<p>When I teased him about it, he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy knowing what a machine is supposed to produce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo Nothing physical except one bank statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you enter my bedroom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The violation returned unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I had not known she invaded my life.<\/p>\n<p>Because a key made it physical again.<\/p>\n<p>Door.<\/p>\n<p>Lock.<\/p>\n<p>Hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>My private space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sat at my kitchen table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou drank wine with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter searching my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made you less human in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was awful.<\/p>\n<p>And probably true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI turned you into a category.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRich?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrivileged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCold?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen hurting me felt different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNolan did the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called people statuses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou became operational participation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose I earned that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou earned consequences for what you did.
