Melinda.

He coordinated with attorneys.

He changed a complex trust.

“Could he have had intermittent impairment?” Kenneth asked.

“Yes.”

“Could the evaluation still be genuine?”

“Yes.”

I forced myself to separate what I wanted from what medicine Northstar Advisory Holdings.

Victor Jr.’s shell.

“How much?” I asked.

“One hundred eighty thousand over three years.”

There it my badge.

Denied altering medical records.

Denied receiving money personally.

Her husband’s company, she claimed, provided legitimate regulatory himself.”

“So you recommended psychiatric assessment?”

“I recommended evaluation.”

“Why Dr. Cole?”

“He had availability.”

“Did you tell Cole Victor was involved in major estate changes?”

“No.”

“Did Victor consent?”

“Yes.”

Everything sounded possible.

That was the problem.

Bad lies were easy.

Good schemes lived inside plausible behavior.

Kenneth asked me afterward, “What do you think?”

“She’s involved.”

“That isn’t evidence.”

“I know.”

“What tells you?”

“The referral.”

“Why?”

“If an older man shows cognitive changes, you usually start with primary care, neurology, geriatrics, maybe neuropsychology depending on circumstances.”

“Not psychiatry?”

“Could be. But not based on repeating himself at one fundraiser unless there was more history.”

“Maybe there was.”

“Then where did she get it?”

Kenneth nodded.

Exactly.

Somebody had built a medical narrative before Dr. Cole entered it.

We searched the false records allegedly corroborating cognitive decline.

Emergency visits.

Memory complaints.

Medication changes.

One documented fall.

None had actually happened.

The signatures belonged to real clinicians.

The notes were not theirs.

“Who approved the corrections when alerts appeared?” Ruiz asked.

The answer finally arrived that evening.

A compliance analyst.

Name:

Nolan Briggs.

I did not recognize it.

Hospital employment history:

Nine years.

Quiet.

No disciplinary actions.

No Leland board role.

No obvious financial connection.

Ruiz searched deeper.

Nothing.

Then she checked family relationships.

Nolan Briggs had been born Nolan Hale.

My stomach dropped.

“Related?”

“Half-brother.”

“To Victor Jr.?”

“Yes.”

Victor Senior had another son.

Nobody had mentioned him.

Not Laura.

Not Melinda.

Not even Victor Jr.

“How?”

Kenneth read the records.

“Victor Senior had an affair thirty-nine years ago. not.

Nolan had built a career inside St. Matthew’s.

Compliance.

Exactly where alerts could be closed quietly.

Exactly where access logs could be manipulated.

Exactly where professional damage could be manufactured.

Ruiz immediately issued an alert.

But Nolan had left the hospital that morning.

His office was empty.

Phone off.

Home empty.

Vehicle found at the train station.

Gone.

Melinda listened through her attorney’s phone.

“Victor had a thought.

“Maybe.”

“Rebecca?”

“I don’t know.”

Victor Jr.’s family had one more branch.

And this one had been living mean?”

“Nolan did.”

Behind the glass, Kenneth whispered, “There.”

Victor continued.

“I wanted the money.”

“Your brother wanted what?”

“To prove he could control the outcome.”

“What outcome?”

“Kirsten’s divorce.”

My skin crawled.

“He designed the instability narrative?”

“Yes.”

“The forged prescriptions?”

“Yes.”

“The recordings?”

“Aaron installed devices. Nolan chose what mattered.”

“The fake account?”

“Yes.”

“The storage locker?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor’s mouth curved faintly.

“Because he said people believe records before people.”

The sentence described my entire nightmare.

Ruiz asked, “What does Nolan want now?”

Victor’s expression changed.

Not fear exactly.

Respect.

“He wants the system to confirm his version.”

“What version?”

“That Kirsten participated.”

I felt Kenneth things.”

“Enough.”

Victor shook his head.

“You haven’t found the ledger.”

“What ledger?”

His attorney looked at him sharply.

Victor ignored him.

“Nolan kept the real transaction ledger.”

“Where?”

“Ask him.”

“Why does it matter?”

“Because every payment, every fake account, every transfer has an authorization trail.”

“Forged?”

Victor smiled.

“Not all.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Ruiz asked.

Victor looked toward the mirror.

“Kirsten signed things she never read.”

I remembered.

Investment papers.

Insurance authorizations.

Clinic forms.

Documents Victor Senior placed in front of me over transactions.”

“Fraudulently.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes.”

“Eventually.”

He leaned back.

“But careers die faster than court cases.”

That was the plan.

Not necessarily prison.

Contamination.

Make my name uncertain long enough that the hospital withdrew support, patients doubted me, licensing boards investigated.

Truth could arrive later.

Damage would already be done.

Ruiz’s phone vibrated.

She checked it.

Her expression changed.

“Nolan just sent an email.”

“To whom?”

“To the medical board.”

My stomach dropped.

“About Kirsten?”

“Yes.”

“With attachments.”

Kenneth swore.

“What attachments?”

Ruiz opened the forwarded copy.

Financial records.

Medication logs.

Access reports.

Signed authorizations.

Photographs of the storage locker.

A narrative alleging that I had participated in a scheme with Connor to conceal assets, then fabricated evidence after our divorce to shift blame onto Melinda and the Hales.

It was elaborate.

Coherent.

False.

And terrifyingly supported by documents.

Victor looked toward the mirror.

“You see?”

Ruiz stood.

“Where is Nolan?”

Victor said nothing.

A guard entered suddenly and spoke to Ruiz.

She left the room.

Thirty seconds later, she appeared behind the observation glass.

“He used his hospital credentials one more time.”

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“From at me.

“St. Matthew’s archive building.”

The old off-site records warehouse.

Where decades of paper charts were stored.

Including the original files Evelyn Mercer had used to hide evidence.

Kenneth understood immediately.

“He’s destroying the originals.”

Ruiz was already moving.

Police units were sent.

Fire department too.

“Why fire?” I asked.

She looked at the live dispatch.

“Because smoke alarms just activated.”

My stomach turned.

Another fire alarm.

But this time it was real.

Cameras showed flames inside the archive building.

Nolan had spent years manufacturing records.

Now he was burning the records that could prove what he had done.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: THE FIRE IN THE
