Evelyn worries he is beginning to confuse protection with control.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Protection with control.<\/p>\n<p>The same disease in another family.<\/p>\n<p>Different justification.<\/p>\n<p>Same result.<\/p>\n<p>A person deciding someone else\u2019s life for them.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked toward the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid called Evan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s voice came through our speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s calling now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer,\u201d Ruiz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut it on speaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Mercer\u2019s voice was calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre police with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expected that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Noah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know I won\u2019t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, give him back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack to whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou met him three days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBiologically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word cut.<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor was listening from the family center command post.<\/p>\n<p>David continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnor raised him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan glanced toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you take him from Connor too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Connor is still entangled with Melinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor\u2019s voice came through:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can hear you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring him back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped Victor\u2019s daughter raise him inside lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one ever knows until after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bitterness sounded generational.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz motioned for Evan to keep him speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Evan asked, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want the Hale line removed from Noah\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Evan said, \u201cMelinda is his mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe worked for Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t know he was her father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that erase what she did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop pretending blood absolves her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan flinched.<\/p>\n<p>The irony was brutal.<\/p>\n<p>David rejected Hale blood while invoking Mercer blood to claim authority over Noah.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d Evan asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtect him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy kidnapping him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy giving you the chance to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoose what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake custody. Full custody. Cut Melinda and Connor out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor swore.<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>David said, \u201cThink carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor will come for him eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor is in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen like Victor never stop because of walls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the answer is security. Courts. Evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system protected him for twenty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was his father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system let it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s voice rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you think becoming him fixes it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David stopped.<\/p>\n<p>That landed.<\/p>\n<p>Evan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took a child because you decided only you understand what\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou lied to me. You tracked him. You staged a fire alarm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t start the alarm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked sharply at the technician tracing the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did?\u201d Evan asked.<\/p>\n<p>David hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone who owed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your courthouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The insider.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz immediately signaled her team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad,\u201d Evan said, \u201cwhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want you to come alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Noah stays with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said you wanted me to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen my choice is simple. Bring him back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound like Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt him.<\/p>\n<p>We all heard it.<\/p>\n<p>After a long pause, David said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandmother died believing every family involved would repeat the same mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen help me prove her wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>The trace produced only a general area.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>Near the Canadian border.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked at the map.<\/p>\n<p>David had not taken Noah south.<\/p>\n<p>He had gone farther north.<\/p>\n<p>Toward remote country.<\/p>\n<p>Toward fewer cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Toward a border.<\/p>\n<p>Connor\u2019s voice came quietly through the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s going to run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood before he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he wanted to disappear immediately, he would not call Evan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Noah\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants Evan to prove he chooses the Mercer family over everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another inherited loyalty test.<\/p>\n<p>Another adult turning a child into evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz ordered teams north.<\/p>\n<p>And for the second time in less than a week, we followed a man who believed taking a child was the same thing as protecting him.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30530\">Click here to continue reading: PART 23: THE HOUSE AT THE BORDER<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melinda did not understand.
