Maybe fifteen people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich exit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEast side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you carry Noah the whole way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d Ruiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman in a staff vest told us children were being moved through the secure courtyard because there was smoke near the main exit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you recognize her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she have identification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had the center logo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s voice came faintly from nearby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said only one adult could go through the courtyard gate at a time because they had to account for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho took Noah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA staff member.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMale or female?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescription?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForties. Glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She lifted one hand.<\/p>\n<p>Connor said, \u201cHe had one of those clipped badges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan broke in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say?\u201d Ruiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went cold.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously not my grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>But whoever had planned this knew enough to choose it.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz began issuing instructions immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend me every frame from the evacuation footage. Cross-check the badge. Lock down all exits from the center, parking structures, surrounding businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor said, \u201cThey already are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not leaving without him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>Evan took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKirsten?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have held him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo should I,\u201d Connor said in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice came harder than I intended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither of you did this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had spent too many years assigning blame to the person easiest to reach.<\/p>\n<p>This was planned.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had manufactured an emergency, created a trusted uniform, and exploited a custody exchange where everyone was already uncertain about who should be holding the child.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked, \u201cDid anyone see smoke?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Evan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmell it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo likely a false alarm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura stirred in the hospice bed.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had gone gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s in jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can\u2019t have taken Noah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz ended the call after arranging a local command contact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d I asked Laura.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor Jr. never worked alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know about Aaron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d Ruiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know his name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda\u2019s expression sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me there was someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I didn\u2019t know until recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Victor Senior contacted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s breathing became shallow again.<\/p>\n<p>The hospice nurse adjusted her oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Victor Senior tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat his son had someone inside the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth, who had been silent near the window, turned immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily court?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr child services. Most deleted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecovered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome metadata.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny court employee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne number appears eleven times in the past month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegistered to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrepaid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrequently near the county courthouse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz took the information.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Laura.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Victor Senior know why his son wanted Noah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat cannot be the only reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura studied his son into.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor Jr. was already violent when he abducted you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe assaulted you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what did his father do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCovered it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>Another secret disguised as protection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor Senior found me at the hunting property,\u201d Laura said. \u201cHe could have turned his son in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause arrest would expose the trust theft, Room 614, my father\u2019s death, all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda whispered, \u201cSo he saved Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd let you disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked to disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s voice weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he also told his son I had left voluntarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Victor Jr. believe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat he had gotten away with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked toward the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time Victor Jr. crossed another line, his father cleaned behind him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Money.<\/p>\n<p>Records.<\/p>\n<p>Reputation.<\/p>\n<p>Violence.<\/p>\n<p>Until there was no line left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe thinks Noah is what his father chose instead of him,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Laura nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trust was not merely money.<\/p>\n<p>To Victor Jr., it was replacement.<\/p>\n<p>A dying father transferring everything to a child while disinheriting the son whose crimes he had spent decades hiding.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She answered.<\/p>\n<p>We watched her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened an incoming video clip.<\/p>\n<p>Family-center security footage.<\/p>\n<p>The who had supposedly tried years earlier to investigate Samuel\u2019s missing money.<\/p>\n<p>The man who knew the old Leland history.<\/p>\n<p>And Noah\u2019s biological grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>I called Evan immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He answered on the first ring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you find something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated what I had to ask.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is your father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you answer.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz sent police to David\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Connor stayed on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man who carried Noah out looks like Evan\u2019s father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe footage is clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. My dad would never\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Because certainty becomes dangerous when evidence arrives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat reason would he have?\u201d Connor demanded.<\/p>\n<p>Laura whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel\u2019s letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel told Elaine what happened in Room 614.
