She placed the documents inside archived patient files under a false record number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz asked, \u201cDo you know the number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura nodded.<\/p>\n<p>She recited it.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the format immediately.<\/p>\n<p>An obsolete medical-record numbering system discontinued fifteen years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do the documents prove?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Victor Senior stole from his son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already have evidence of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing became shallow.<\/p>\n<p>A nurse stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Laura waved her away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe documents prove the money taken from Victor Jr.\u2019s trust was replaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReplaced when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore Daniel died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>That contradicted everything Victor Jr. believed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the money was replaced, why did my grandmother spend twenty-two years making payments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause those payments were not for Victor Jr.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat were they for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel\u2019s children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aaron\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why were they sent to Victor Senior?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was supposed to administer the restitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he stole that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Senior had not stolen once.<\/p>\n<p>He had intercepted reparations intended for the Pike family.<\/p>\n<p>My grandmother thought she was paying Daniel\u2019s children.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Jr. thought my family owed him.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron thought the Sinclairs had stolen from his family.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone had been pointed toward everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Senior had stood in the middle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened to the money?\u201d Kenneth asked.<\/p>\n<p>Laura gave a tired smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou haven\u2019t found his private trust yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one he created for the person he believed deserved everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura looked at Melinda.<\/p>\n<p>Not me.<\/p>\n<p>Melinda went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor Senior knew who you were after you contacted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew what his son had done to me. He knew what Aaron had become.
