then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe disappeared for two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did he go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say when he returned?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda\u2019s voice became almost inaudible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Laura Pike would never trouble anyone again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz stood.<\/p>\n<p>The missing-person investigation had just changed from a twenty-three-year-old disappearance to a possible three-year-old homicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know where Victor went during those two weeks?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything he mentioned afterward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda shook her Laura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan spoke behind the glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandmother did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn had a cottage in Maine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNear Camden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill in the family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Sold after she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same year Laura\u2019s letters stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho handled the sale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Property records answered within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The cottage had been purchased through an LLC.<\/p>\n<p>One we had already seen.<\/p>\n<p>Northstar Advisory Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Jr.<\/p>\n<p>I felt the old pattern close again.<\/p>\n<p>Shell company.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden property.<\/p>\n<p>Family secret.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz requested a search warrant.<\/p>\n<p>Before she finished the call, Evan\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at Connor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Noah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said a word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor almost laughed from relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat word?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe keeps pointing at a picture in Melinda\u2019s bag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat picture?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan showed us a photograph sent by the caregiver.<\/p>\n<p>An older woman stood on a beach holding a baby.<\/p>\n<p>The image was faded.<\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2019s hair gray.<\/p>\n<p>The baby unmistakably Noah.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, in handwriting police had not yet examined, were four words:<\/p>\n<p>For Melanie.
