Then Victor would move the money through him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou expected me to help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were already hiding accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Connor had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>The truth did not absolve him.<\/p>\n<p>It placed his choices exactly where they belonged.<\/p>\n<p>He had not joined the conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>He had simply made himself useful to it.<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz ended the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Before Melinda was taken away, I asked one question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you send me the voicemail?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Leland?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Rebecca had taken Noah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me to find him before Victor did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Victor Jr. was coming for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you said Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never called Victor Senior Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you call him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ambiguity had been ours.<\/p>\n<p>Not hers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Victor Senior was dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo when you said Victor, you always meant his son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That simple answer resolved the mystery that had terrified us for hours.<\/p>\n<p>But one question remained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy warn me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melinda looked toward Connor.<\/p>\n<p>Then back to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Noah didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had years to remember that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no apology capable of bridging that distance.<\/p>\n<p>Police took her away.<\/p>\n<p>Connor remained at the table.<\/p>\n<p>After a long silence, he asked Kenneth, \u201cWhat happens to Noah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily court will decide immediate custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s the biological father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words came painfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I see him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth looked at Ruiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want him to know I didn\u2019t leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at the third box.<\/p>\n<p>We thought it had already revealed the oldest secret.<\/p>\n<p>It had not.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the letters was a smaller folder.<\/p>\n<p>One label.<\/p>\n<p>MERCER.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Senior.<\/p>\n<p>And Daniel Pike.<\/p>\n<p>All four men standing outside Leland\u2019s predecessor office.<\/p>\n<p>Dated twenty-five years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>On the back, my grandfather had written:<\/p>\n<p>The four of us agreed never to speak of what happened in Room 614.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was Room 614?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz began searching old building plans.<\/p>\n<p>The predecessor office had occupied another building.<\/p>\n<p>Sixth floor.<\/p>\n<p>Room 614 was listed as records storage.<\/p>\n<p>But a second document in the folder showed an after-hours security log.<\/p>\n<p>The date was two days before Daniel Pike\u2019s fatal car crash.<\/p>\n<p>All four men entered Room 614.<\/p>\n<p>Only three signed out.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Pike did not.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe died two days later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe the accident was not the beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruiz looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may have been the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30520\">Click here to continue reading: PART 16: ROOM 614<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police did not let anyone touch the third box until the cabin was processed.
