14 – THE CABIN IN WINTER

The cabin was ninety-four miles north.

I had not been there since my grandfather’s funeral.

Even in summer, the road had felt isolated.

In darkness before dawn, surrounded by bare trees and patches of old snow, it felt like a place someone could disappear without effort.

I did not drive.

Detective Ruiz sat behind the wheel of an unmarked SUV.

Kenneth sat beside her.

I was in the rear.

Connor had been forbidden to come.

He had argued until Ruiz threatened to have him removed from the operation entirely.

He finally agreed to remain at the station.

His last words to me before we left were not about Melinda.

“Find whatever gets her out.”

I knew what he meant.

Whatever she had done, Noah might someday need answers only she could give.

The convoy stayed far behind.

Victor Jr. had demanded I arrive alone.

We were going to make the visible part of that instruction appear true.

At 4:51 a.m., we stopped at a roadside pullout eight miles from the property.

Ruiz handed me a small transmitter.

“Under your collar.”

I clipped it inside my sweater.

“Can he detect it?”

“Possibly.”

Kenneth hated every second.

“You do not enter if you see him.”

Ruiz corrected him.

“She may have to.”

He turned.

“No.”

“If Melinda is inside, we cannot assume he will bring her out.”

Kenneth looked at me.

“This is not a courtroom.”

“I know.”

“You cannot reason with someone like this.”

“I’m not planning to win an argument.”

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t have to prove anything.”

“I know.”

For years, people had made decisions around what they believed I needed to prove.

That I could become pregnant.

That I was a good wife.

That I was stable.

That I was not greedy during divorce.

That I was not bitter.

Now there was only one thing that mattered.

Get Melinda out alive.

And understand what had been buried in my family’s past before someone else died because of it.

The brass key sat in my coat pocket.

The original blue book remained with police.

We carried high-resolution copies of its relevant pages in a slim folder.

At 5:12, Ruiz stopped the SUV behind an abandoned gas station.

A second vehicle waited.

Inside it was an older sedan registered to a police asset unit.

No obvious markings.

I would drive the remaining distance alone.

“Stay on the road unless he tells you otherwise,” Ruiz said.

“Do not surrender your phone.”

“Understood.”

“If you lose signal, the transmitter remains active for approximately three miles.”

Kenneth added, “And if anything feels loud.

I drove north.

My grandmother had hated that road in winter.

She said the curves made her carsick.

My grandfather loved it.

He used to whistle while driving.

The memory arrived with absurd clarity.

His hands on the steering wheel.

Brown gloves.

Coffee in a thermos.

Me in the back seat at eleven years old, complaining about the cold.

I had thought adults knew what they were doing.

That may have been childhood’s greatest illusion.

My phone buzzed.

Victor Jr.

Turn left at the old ranger sign.

I saw it thirty seconds later.

The road narrowed.

Snow covered the shoulders.

No houses.

No lights.

Another message.

Stop at the iron gate.

The gate was open.

That frightened me.

When my grandparents owned the property, it was always closed.

I drove through.

The cabin appeared after another half mile.

Two stories.

Dark wood.

Stone chimney.

The porch sagged slightly at one end.

I had dreamed about this place years after it was sold.

Now one downstairs lamp was on.

I parked.

Victor Jr. messaged.

Bring the key.

Leave the phone.

I stared at the screen.

Ruiz would hear through the transmitter, but without the phone I lost my direct line.

I placed it on the passenger seat.

Then got out.

Cold air cut through my coat.

The front door opened before I reached the steps.

A man stood in the doorway.

Victor Hale Jr.

No glasses.

Thinner than the old gala photograph.

But unquestionably the same man.

“Dr. Sinclair.”

His voice was familiar.

Not from the messages.

From that gala.

Your husband is already seated.

I stopped six feet from the porch.

“Where is Melinda?”

“Inside.”

“Show me.”

“First the key.”

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“My father always said your family negotiated badly.”

“My grandmother negotiated with him for twenty-two years.”

The smile disappeared.

“Did you read the book?”

“Yes.”

“Then you know.”

“I know your father stole from you.”

For the first time, emotion crossed his face.

Not grief.

Hatred.

“He took everything my mother left me.”

“And my family paid him back.”

“They paid him.”

“Yes.”

“He told me they didn’t.”

“Then he lied.”

Victor Jr. stared at me.

“You make that sound simple.”

“It isn’t.”

“No.”

He stepped onto the porch.

“My father built an entire life out of making theft sound me here once.”

“When?”

“I was seventeen.”

That would have been near the beginning of the repayment arrangement.

“She looked me in the back.”

“She never checked.”

There was the wound.

Not just money.

Adults making agreements around a boy and never asking whether the restitution reached him.

“I can’t change that.”

“No.”

“But you’ve spent years punishing people who weren’t there.”

His eyes sharpened.

“Be careful.”

“You targeted me.”

“Your inheritance was built partly on money that should have been mine.”

“My Noah?”

Victor’s expression changed.

The first real uncertainty.

“Noah complicated everything.”

“Because he wasn’t Connor’s.”

“Because Melinda wanted to keep him.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

“She was supposed to end the for Ruiz through the transmitter.

Nothing.

Of course nothing.

It was one-way.

I climbed the porch steps.

The cabin smelled the same.

Wood smoke.

Old pine.

Dust.

Except there was no fire.

Only electric heat.

Family photographs were gone.

The furniture was unfamiliar.

Victor led me through the living room.

The old safe sat behind a paneled wall in my grandfather’s study.

Exactly where I remembered.

“What’s inside?” Victor asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You have the key.”

“That doesn’t mean I know.”

He gestured.

“Open it.”

I approached the wall.

My hands shook.

The key fit the small brass lock.

Behind it was a combination dial.

Victor’s face hardened.

“You didn’t mention a combination.”

“My grandfather always left it unlocked when we were here.”

“Try Ruth’s birthday.”

I look.

“I doubt Thomas Sinclair planned for your divorce.”

I ignored him.

Then remembered my grandfather’s habit.

Winter money.

Every December.

He used the same number for everything involving the cabin.

The date he bought it.

1207.

Four digits.

The safe required six.

December 7 plus the year.

I tried 120784.

Click.

Victor inhaled.

The door opened.

Inside were three metal document boxes.

No cash.

No jewelry.

Paper.

Victor pushed past me.

“Move.”

He pulled out the first box.

Bank statements.

Canceled checks.

Copies of wire my family had protected his father.

He had chased the wrong enemy because it was easier than accepting that the person who betrayed him most was blood.

A sound came from upstairs.

A muffled thump.

“Melinda?”

Victor’s head snapped up.

I ran toward the stairs.

He caught my moved.

Stopped.

“What?”

He did not answer.

I stepped closer.

The file contained a signed agreement.

Victor Senior had agreed to repay his son separately.

The December payments from my grandmother were not the only restitution.

He had promised Victor Jr. ownership interests in Leland.

A substantial percentage.

“What happened?”

Victor read the final page.

His face emptied.

The interest had been transferred.

Not to Victor Jr.

To a trust.

Beneficiary:

Victor Hale Jr.

Trustee:

Victor Hale Senior.

“He controlled it.”

I whispered, “Your father received the flipped to an attached valuation.

The interest had been worth millions.

Far more than he had been trying to recover from me.

His entire scheme had been built on a lie.

A creak sounded upstairs.

Then a woman screamed.

Melinda.

Victor shoved the papers into the box.

“Stay here.”

I grabbed his sleeve.

“You said she was safe.”

He pulled away.

“She was.”

“What does that mean?”

A crash came from upstairs.

Victor swore and ran.

I followed.

The hallway above was dark.

One bedroom door stood open.

Melinda was inside.

Still tied to the chair.

But someone else stood behind her.

Rebecca Pike.

She held a handgun against Melinda’s neck.

Victor stopped.

“What are you doing?”

Rebecca’s face was wet with tears.

“You weren’t going to let her go.”

“I told you to leave.”

“You told me Noah would
