him.

The reply:

She repaid my father.

Not me.

Another:

He kept it.

My eyes moved to the December payments.

Victor Senior had taken money from my grandmother for twenty-two years.

Supposedly to repay his son.

But perhaps none of it ever reached Victor Jr.

Kenneth said quietly, “His father stole from him twice.”

Ruiz looked at the messages.

“That does not justify any of this.”

“No.”

But for the first time, Victor Jr.’s obsession made terrible sense.

Another message arrived.

The book proves the debt.

I typed:

It proves my family paid it.

His answer:

Then bring me the proof my father received it.

Kenneth frowned.

“We have a list.”

“He wants bank records.”

I remembered my grandmother’s note.

The rest is where Thomas put the winter money.

“The cabin safe.”

Ruiz nodded.

“If records survived.”

Connor looked at her.

“And Victor Jr. owns the cabin.”

Another message came.

You have until sunrise.

Then:

Bring the key.

Or Melinda dies knowing Connor finally learned whose child he raised.

Connor lunged toward the phone.

Ruiz grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t.”

“He’s using her.”

“Yes.”

“Then use me.”

Ruiz looked at him.

“He doesn’t want you.”

Connor’s face twisted.

“No.”

I stared at the brass key in the evidence bag.

Victor Jr. wanted the past proven.

He wanted documents showing his father had received the repayments.

He wanted vindication.

And he believed I was the only person left who could unlock it.

I looked at Ruiz.

“You’re going to send me.”

Kenneth answered before she did.

“No.”

Ruiz remained silent.

That frightened Kenneth more than an argument would have.

“Kirsten,” he said, “absolutely not.”

I looked at the photograph of Melinda bound to the chair.

Then at my grandmother’s handwriting.

Two families had spent decades hiding what one generation had done.

Connor had lied.

Melinda had lied.

Victor Senior had lied.

My grandfather had lied.

And everyone younger had inherited the consequences.

“I’m not asking whether it’s safe.”

I looked at Ruiz.

“I’m asking whether it gives you a chance to find him.”

She met my eyes.

“Yes.”

Kenneth swore under his breath.

I looked at the key.

“Then we go to the cabin.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: THE CABIN IN
