mine.

Victor Hale’s.

By noon, police had confirmed Victor’s death was suspicious.

The exact cause had not been released.

But the timeline was clear enough.

He had died before Melinda recorded the voicemail.

His blood had later been placed in two separate vehicles.

Someone was moving evidence.

Someone who expected investigators to connect every visible crime to the same dead man.

Kenneth spread copies of old trust documents across the hotel conference table.

“I want to know whether Victor signed these himself.”

Detective Ruiz looked skeptical.

“He’s dead.”

“I’m aware.”

“You think the signatures are forged?”

“I think we’ve spent three days assuming every document bearing Victor’s name actually involves Victor.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Every document.

Ruiz requested archived originals from Leland.

The first batch arrived electronically less than an hour later.

Victor’s authentic signature was compact.

The V narrow.

The H almost vertical.

Kenneth compared it to the Northstar documents Connor had signed.

Different.

Not wildly.

Enough.

“That isn’t Victor’s signature,” Connor said.

“No.”

I looked at Kenneth.

“Then whose?”

“We need more samples.”

Ruiz contacted Leland’s compliance office.

They produced internal approvals, client forms, expense reports, committee minutes.

Kenneth sorted them into two piles.

Authentic.

Questionable.

The questionable signatures appeared only on documents involving a specific set of accounts.

My family’s.

Northstar.

Several related shell companies.

And financial transactions tied to Melinda.

“What connects them?” I asked.

Ruiz pointed toward one column.

“Employee processing code.”

A number appeared repeatedly.

LPC-4417.

“Whose?”

The detective waited for verification.

Then read the name.

“Victor Hale Junior.”

I stared at her.

“Victor had a son?”

Connor spoke first.

“I didn’t know that.”

Neither did I.

Victor had advised my family for years.

He had mentioned golf.

Travel.

His late wife.

Never a son.

Ruiz opened an employee file.

Victor Hale Jr.

Former compliance analyst.

Former operations manager.

Employment ended six years earlier.

Reason:

Internal misconduct investigation.

“What kind?” Kenneth asked.

“Unauthorized access to client accounts.”

The room changed.

“Was he charged?” I asked.

“No.”

“Why not?”

Ruiz scanned farther.

“The firm resolved the matter internally.”

Kenneth’s face darkened.

“Meaning they buried it.”

“Possibly.”

“Who supervised the resolution?”

Ruiz scrolled.

Then stopped.

“Victor Hale Senior.”

Of course.

The father had protected the son.

And by protecting him, had preserved a vulnerability inside the firm.

Connor leaned against the table.

“So which Victor did Melinda mean?”

No one needed to answer.

The detective requested a photograph.

It appeared on screen.

Victor Hale Jr. was younger than I expected.

Early forties.

Dark hair.

Clean-shaven.

Ordinary face.

I stared at it.

Nothing.

Then something moved in my memory.

The charity gala.

A man near the seating table.

Dark suit.

Foundation badge.

I had spoken to him for less than a minute.

He had told me Melinda was already inside.

I stood.

“I’ve met him.”

Ruiz looked up.

“When?”

“The Leland gala.”

Connor stepped closer.

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

I hated the uncertainty.

“Maybe.”

Ruiz enlarged the photograph.

I looked again.

The man at the gala had been heavier.

He had worn glasses.

But the mouth.

The narrow upper lip.

The small scar near the left eyebrow.

“Yes.”

My voice steadied.

“He was there.”

“What did he say?”

“He checked my name.”

“Why?”

“Seating.”

I closed my eyes, rebuilding the moment.

I had been late.

Harried.

Still wearing my hospital badge under my coat.

He looked at the clipboard.

Then at me.

Dr. Sinclair. Your husband is already seated.

“With Melinda,” I whispered.

Connor stared.

“He put her beside me.”

“Yes.”

That had been the beginning.

Not random seating.

Not coincidence.

Placement.

Ruiz immediately requested the gala planning records.

The event company no longer existed.

But Leland had archived invoices.

One contractor had been paid for guest coordination.

Vantage Events LLC.

Kenneth searched corporate records.

Vantage had been registered by Aaron Pike.

Connor laughed once, bitterly.

“So the whole thing was staged.”

Not the affair.

That part had still required choices.

Connor chose.

Melinda chose.

But the opportunity had been engineered.

Ruiz’s phone rang.

She stepped away.

I looked at Connor.

He did not meet my eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

I felt tired.

“For which part?”

“For telling myself she understood me.”

I said nothing.

“She knew things about you I didn’t expect a stranger to know.”

“That didn’t bother you?”

“I thought you’d told her.”

“And when did you learn I hadn’t?”

He swallowed.

“Later.”

“How much later?”

“After we were already sleeping together.”

There it was.

Still responsibility.

Still betrayal.

The conspiracy did not absolve him.

It only explained why someone had bothered to tempt him.

“You could have stopped then.”

“I know.”

“And you didn’t.”

“No.”

We left it there.

Ruiz returned.

“They located Victor Hale Jr.’s last known residence.”

“Where?”

“Empty.”

“When did he leave?”

“Three months ago.”

Kenneth frowned.

“Before any of this surfaced.”

“Yes.”

“What about employment?”

“No current payroll.”

“Bank activity?”

“Minimal.”

“Passport?”

Ruiz looked at me.

“Active.”

“Any recent travel?”

“Several trips to Canada.”

The abandoned sedan heading north suddenly made sense.

Connor asked, “Is that where Melinda is going?”

“Possibly.”

Again that word.

But this time we had a name.

A second Victor.

A living one.

The investigation accelerated.

By late afternoon, officers recovered security footage from the church daycare where Noah had been left.

The woman who dropped him wore a cap and large glasses.

But Ruiz froze the frame.

“Do you recognize her?”

I leaned closer.

No.

Connor did.

His expression changed instantly.

“Rebecca.”

“Rebecca who?”

“Pike.”

Aaron’s sister.

The fertility coordinator.

Rebecca had carried Noah into the daycare.

That connected the clinic directly to the escape.

“Why save him?” I asked.

Kenneth looked at the screen.

“Maybe she wasn’t saving him.”

“What do you mean?”

“She may have been removing him from whatever happened next.”

The phrasing made me sick.

Connor whispered, “Where is Melinda?”

No one knew.

Noah had been taken into protective custody pending decisions involving Evan Mercer, Melinda, and the court.

Evan had been notified.

Connor had not yet been permitted to see him.

He took that news quietly.

More quietly than I expected.

At five, Kenneth received access to additional documents seized from the old Leland building.

Among them was a handwritten ledger.

Not Melinda’s handwriting.

Not Victor Senior’s.

Names appeared in columns.

Client.

Access.

Pressure point.

Leverage.

Disposition.

My name was near the middle.

Kirsten Sinclair.

Access:

Spouse / friend / medical schedule.

Pressure point:

Marriage / fertility.

Leverage:

Inheritance administration.

Disposition:

Asset diversion after marital fracture.

I read the line twice.

“Marital fracture.”

Kenneth’s mouth tightened.

“They intended to cause the divorce.”

Connor stared at the page.

“They didn’t have to.”

No.

They had not forced him to cheat.

They had only identified the fault line.

Then pressed.

Under Connor’s name:

Status insecurity.

Infertility diagnosis.

Financial resentment.

Susceptibility:

High.

He looked away.

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then we reached Melinda.

Recruitment complete.

Compensation contingent.

Emotional involvement discouraged.

Pregnancy risk noted.

Pregnancy risk.

Noah.

He had been reduced to a risk before he was even born.

Connor read the words over my shoulder.

His face broke.

I moved the page away.

Not to protect him.

To protect myself from watching.

Kenneth flipped farther.

Aaron Pike.

Operational support.

Rebecca Pike.

Medical access / documentation.

Victor H. Connor settled before repositioning was finished.

Victor Senior:

Good. Let it end.

Victor Junior:

It doesn’t end. There is still access through the child.

Connor closed his eyes.

Noah.

The trust.

The forged signatures.

The half-million dollars.

Another message:

Victor Senior:

The child is innocent.

Victor Junior:

The child is useful.

Connor left the table.

He walked to the far wall and pressed was going to confess.”

Ruiz nodded.

“And someone stopped him.”

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Kenneth said, “Don’t touch it.”

A message appeared.

You have been reading my father’s phone.

Ruiz moved immediately.

“Put it on the table.”

Another message.

He always became sentimental when it mattered.

Connor returned from the wall.

“Victor Jr.”

Ruiz signaled another detective to begin tracing.

A third message appeared.

Kirsten, none of this needed to become personal.

My skin crawled.

Then:

Your grandmother’s account should have covered what my father took from me.

I stared.

What my father took from me.

Not random theft.

Revenge.

Another message came.

Your husband made things messy.

Connor’s face hardened.

Then:

Melinda made them worse.

And finally:

But Noah made them dangerous.

Ruiz whispered, “Keep him talking.”

Kenneth looked at me.

I typed with shaking fingers.

Where is Melinda?

The reply came almost immediately.

Alive.

Connor leaned over the table.

“Ask where.”

I typed.

Where?

Three dots appeared.

Vanished.

Returned.

Then:

She is deciding whether she wants to remain alive.

Connor swore.

Ruiz’s team was already first.

Melinda sat in a chair.

Hands bound.

Face bruised.

Alive.

Behind her was a window.

Dark water beyond it.

A narrow strip of lights.

Connor whispered, “Where is that?”

I did not know.

But Kenneth did.

He pointed toward the upper corner of the image.

A reflection in the glass.

A red sign.

Only three reversed letters were visible.

MAR.

“Marina,” he said.

Ruiz grabbed the phone.

“There are six me.

“What original?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.”

Victor Jr. sent one last line.

Your grandmother hid it from my around mine.

She had said something I had never understood.

If Victor ever asks for the blue book, tell him it burned.

At the time, I thought she was confused.

I
