Mom.

Then Ethan.

I was wrong about at least two of them.

Vale showed me one payment once.

It came through a company called Red Marsh Consulting.

Kenneth immediately wrote the name down.

Walter frowned.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

Neither had I.

The letter continued.

Find out who owns Red was sent to you.

My hands went cold.

Someone had been watching the story evolve from outside it.

I read on.

Vale said the client wanted proof.

I asked proof of what.

He said, “That the Fleming bloodline is exactly as rotten as they think.”

Walter swore quietly.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Who would say that?”

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

I kept reading.

There is another thing.

The real Noah test was not the first DNA result Vale gave me.

Kenneth looked up.

I continued.

Three years ago, when I asked him to investigate my birth, he tested material he said came from Dad and compared it to mine.

He told me Dad was not my biological father.

He also said Michael was probably my father.

I didn’t believe him.

Not completely.

So I paid him for more work.

That’s when he started using me.

Walter stared at the table.

The letter blurred for a moment.

I blinked until the words returned.

Vale said if I told Dad without certainty, Dad might cut me out before I could prove anything.

That was exactly what I already feared.

So I kept quiet.

Later he told me Michael was almost certainly my biological father.

I still did not tell Dad.

Not because of the money.

Not only because of the money.

Because I could not stand the idea that the man who spent my whole life telling me blood and succession mattered more than almost anything might look at me and decide I was never really his.

Walter turned away.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

I continued.

Then Noah was born.

You probably understand the rest better than I did.

If I admitted Noah was not mine, I was admitting the thing I had spent my whole life fearing: that biology could erase a family.

So I lied.

And once I lied, every next lie became necessary.

That was Connor in one sentence.

Not excuse.

Structure.

One lie making the next seem compulsory.

The next page began differently.

There is something about you I need to say because I may not get another chance.

I almost stopped.

Instead, I continued.

You were not the reason we failed to have children.

I knew that.

I knew it while you blamed yourself.

I knew it when you apologized on the bathroom floor.

I knew it every time you took another medication and every time you came home from an appointment pretending you were fine.

I let you carry my shame because I was afraid of what would happen if I carried it myself.

There is no version of that where I am not a coward.

I lowered the page.

No one spoke.

The room felt unbearably public.

Kenneth looked toward Morales.

“Can we give her a minute?”

“No.”

I surprised myself.

“Keep going.”

I lifted the next page.

I know sorry is useless.

I am still sorry.

You deserved the truth long before you deserved an apology.

I turned the page.

Then the tone changed again.

If I’m missing, don’t assume I ran voluntarily.

Vale wanted me out of the country.

He said once I was gone, everyone would believe I arranged Gabriel’s assault and fled.

He said the person paying him wanted that story.

I asked why.

He said because if I went down publicly, the trust litigation would expose everything.

Not only Noah.

Not only my birth.

Everything.

Kenneth leaned forward.

“What everything?”

I kept reading.

Vale mentioned an older trust.

Dad will know what that means.

Walter went completely still.

I looked at him.

“What older trust?”

He did not answer.

Evelyn stared at him.

“Walter.”

His face had lost color.

“The original family trust.”

“What about it?”

He said nothing.

I returned to the letter.

Vale said the original trust contained a provision nobody remembers anymore because Dad replaced it after the subsidiary disaster.

He said if my paternity was ever challenged successfully, the old provision could matter again.

I don’t understand how.

Ask Dad.

Everyone looked at Walter.

He whispered, “No.”

Kenneth said, “You need to explain.”

Walter stood.

“Not yet.”

Morales stepped in front of him.

“Mr. Fleming.”

Walter stared at the detective.

Then sat again.

“My father created the original trust.”

“Your father meaning Connor’s grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“What provision?”

Walter rubbed both hands over his face.

“It concerned illegitimate descendants.”

The old-fashioned word sounded ugly in his mouth.

“What did it say?”

“That any descendant born outside a recognized marriage could not control voting shares.”

Evelyn went pale.

“Michael.”

Walter nodded.

“If Michael fathered Connor with you while you were married to me…”

Kenneth finished carefully.

“Connor could be considered Michael’s biological descendant born outside Michael’s marriage.”

“Yes.”

“Would that remove him from succession?”

“Under the original language, possibly.”

“But you replaced that trust.”

“I restructured it.”

“Completely?”

“I thought so.”

The letter suddenly mattered even more.

I read on.

Vale said the old trust was never fully extinguished.

He said some shares remained inside a holding vehicle tied to it.

He said someone has been buying interests connected to that vehicle for years.

Walter stood again.

“That's impossible.”

Kenneth looked at him.

“Apparently not.”

I read the next line.

Red Marsh Consulting.

Walter stopped moving.

There it was again.

I continued.

Vale said Red Marsh owns enough indirect interests that if the trust dispute becomes public, whoever controls Red Marsh could challenge Dad’s succession structure.

I asked who owns it.

Vale laughed.

Then he said, “Someone who hates your family more than I love money.”

The room stayed silent.

I turned the page.

I don’t know who that is.

But I think they are the person who paid Vale to keep watching Melinda.

And maybe the person who wanted Gabriel hurt.

Morales took the page from me gently.

“That’s enough for now.”

“No.”

“There are two pages left.”

“I want them.”

He studied me.

Then handed them back.

The next page contained practical details.

Account numbers.

A password to an encrypted backup.

A storage unit reference.

A list of documents Connor claimed to have copied from Vale.

Then the final page.

Kirsten,

If I survive this, I don’t expect you to forgive me.

If I don’t, I don’t want you remembering me as the man in the hospital hallway.

That man was real.

But he was also afraid.

That does not excuse him.

I know that now.

Take back what I stole from you.

Make them correct the settlement.

Make the medical record part of the truth if you need it.

Do not protect me.

And whatever happens with Noah, please remember he had nothing to do with any of this.

I know you already know that.

You always knew how to separate the child from the mess adults made around him.

I wish I had learned that sooner.

Connor.

I set the pages down.

Walter stared at the floor.

Evelyn was crying silently.

Kenneth looked tired.

Morales took a long breath.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

His expression sharpened.

“Where?”

Another pause.

“We’re coming.”

He ended the call.

“What happened?” I asked.

“They found Connor.”

My heart hammered.

“Alive?”

Morales
