We don\u2019t know whether she is at that building now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor was already putting on his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou interfere with the search and you could make this worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son is missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words came automatically.<\/p>\n<p>Then Connor stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I watched him struggle with what to call Noah.<\/p>\n<p>Not biologically his son.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly never legally his son.<\/p>\n<p>But still the child he had loved.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth\u2019s voice softened by one degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen let the people who can legally enter the building do their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor sat.<\/p>\n<p>Police arrived at the old Leland property twenty-seven minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth kept the detective on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The lobby was empty.<\/p>\n<p>Security systems were active.<\/p>\n<p>The building\u2019s new owner had leased several floors for document storage, but the ninth and tenth remained under a transition agreement involving Leland Private Capital.<\/p>\n<p>Victor\u2019s former suite had not been cleared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan they enter?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe detective is obtaining authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor paced.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the photo of the storage locker again.<\/p>\n<p>FLEMING \/ SINCLAIR.<\/p>\n<p>2018\u20132025.<\/p>\n<p>The dates mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I had met Connor years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Why begin records in 2018?<\/p>\n<p>I pulled up my calendar archive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened in 2018?\u201d I murmured.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth looked over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinancially?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stopped pacing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandmother died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>My grandmother had died in February.<\/p>\n<p>The final distribution of her trust had taken place that summer.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had handled it.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s when I inherited the second tranche.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth opened a calculator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust over two million at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that expression.<\/p>\n<p>He hated discussing my inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>During our marriage, he had insisted it never mattered to him.<\/p>\n<p>I had wanted to believe that.<\/p>\n<p>Now everything involving money seemed contaminated.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth asked, \u201cDid Victor recommend changes after the distribution?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiversification. New custodial accounts. A charitable vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed whatever he put in front of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The admission embarrassed me.<\/p>\n<p>I could perform a complicated procedure with exacting concentration.<\/p>\n<p>But money had always felt abstract.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes.<\/p>\n<p>Percentages.<\/p>\n<p>Language designed to hide meaning.<\/p>\n<p>I had assumed competence could be delegated.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth did not criticize me.<\/p>\n<p>He only asked, \u201cDid Connor attend those meetings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale encouraged it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said spouses should understand the structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat structure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew details?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew general amounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow general?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>That was what his silence meant.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>The detective came back on the line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re entering the ninth floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, we heard only radio chatter.<\/p>\n<p>A door opening.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Then the detective said, \u201cThere are signs someone has been here recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat signs?\u201d Kenneth asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLights. Food. A portable crib.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor gripped the edge of the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t see anyone yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line crackled.<\/p>\n<p>Another voice in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a child\u2019s medication bottle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor\u2019s face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat medication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective read the label.<\/p>\n<p>It was Noah\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The antibiotic prescribed at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Connor turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe brought him there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>The officers searched the tenth floor next.<\/p>\n<p>No Melinda.<\/p>\n<p>No Noah.<\/p>\n<p>But they found something else.<\/p>\n<p>A sleeping bag.<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Diapers.<\/p>\n<p>Formula.<\/p>\n<p>A laptop.<\/p>\n<p>And printed airline itineraries.<\/p>\n<p>One ticket was in Melinda\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Another listed Noah.<\/p>\n<p>Departure: the following morning.<\/p>\n<p>Destination: Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>Connor stared at Kenneth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s trying to leave the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy maybe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there are three different itineraries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth read them.<\/p>\n<p>Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico City.<\/p>\n<p>Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p>All departing from different airports within twenty-four hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecoys,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective requested that Kenneth bring us to the station for formal statements.<\/p>\n<p>Before we left, another email arrived.<\/p>\n<p>This one came from a court-appointed forensic accountant assisting in the reopened divorce asset review.<\/p>\n<p>Subject:<\/p>\n<p>URGENT \u2014 HISTORICAL TRUST IRREGULARITIES.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth opened the attached spreadsheet.<\/p>\n<p>Rows of transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Old dates.<\/p>\n<p>Transfers I did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>He scrolled.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKenneth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis began before your marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leakage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Small transfers had been made from administrative accounts tied to my grandmother\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n<p>Not millions.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough to attract immediate attention.<\/p>\n<p>Ten thousand here.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve thousand there.<\/p>\n<p>Consulting fees.<\/p>\n<p>Management adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>Administrative reimbursements.<\/p>\n<p>All routed through entities associated with Victor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth calculated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApproximately four hundred thousand before you inherited direct control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor was stealing from my grandmother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears he may have been.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Kirsten wasn\u2019t the target.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer family was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That distinction was worse.<\/p>\n<p>It meant I had not stumbled into a crime.<\/p>\n<p>I had inherited one.<\/p>\n<p>At the police station, Connor and I were separated for interviews.<\/p>\n<p>Mine lasted almost two hours.<\/p>\n<p>The detective asked about Melinda.<\/p>\n<p>When we met.<\/p>\n<p>How often we saw each other.<\/p>\n<p>Whether she had access to my house.<\/p>\n<p>Whether she knew passwords.<\/p>\n<p>Whether she ever borrowed identification.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered something halfway through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy passport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago, I couldn\u2019t find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor how long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelinda found it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the side pocket of a suitcase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas that somewhere you had already checked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective wrote rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she have unsupervised access to your home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeys?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlarm code?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n<p>Mine did.<\/p>\n<p>A memory opened.<\/p>\n<p>Melinda standing in my bedroom doorway while I packed for a conference.<\/p>\n<p>Holding my passport.<\/p>\n<p>Laughing.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019d lose your own head if it weren\u2019t attached.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had laughed too.<\/p>\n<p>The interview ended after eight.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth was waiting outside.<\/p>\n<p>Connor was gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith another detective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth looked tired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found something on the laptop from the Leland building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmails between Melinda and Aaron Pike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow recent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth guided me toward a quiet corner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne message says, \u2018Connor knows about Evan. Kirsten knows about the trust. Victor wants the problem contained tonight.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContained?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know what that means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Aaron?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe replied, \u2018Take the child and wait upstairs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoah was at Leland because Aaron told her to go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did she leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably because she got scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We walked toward the exit.<\/p>\n<p>The police had issued alerts for Melinda\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Airports had been notified.<\/p>\n<p>Border agencies had Noah\u2019s information.<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, night had settled over the city.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth offered to drive me home.<\/p>\n<p>I accepted.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway there, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Connor.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth said, \u201cSpeaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>Connor\u2019s breathing was ragged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found her car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAirport garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich airport?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Noah\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelinda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnor, stay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The car seemed to shrink around me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found blood in the back seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth\u2019s voice became firm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not go near that vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not there.
