He had helped my grandmother restructure her trust after my grandfather died. When I inherited part of that estate, Victor became the person who translated the language of money into sentences I could tolerate.<\/p>\n<p>I had trusted him because my family had trusted him.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth stared at Victor\u2019s name on the archived Leland Children\u2019s Foundation roster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t planning to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor was still standing near the conference-room table.<\/p>\n<p>His face had lost the wrecked softness from the paternity result.<\/p>\n<p>Now he looked alert.<\/p>\n<p>Almost angry enough to be useful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke with Hale during the divorce,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me your attorney handled disclosure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor rubbed the back of his neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale called after you filed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said divorces create unnecessary financial exposure if people panic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth stopped writing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose exact words?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he advise?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep long-term investments stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse started climbing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStable where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe suggested moving certain holdings temporarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInto undisclosed accounts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor looked at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, I didn\u2019t think of it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were under a legal obligation to disclose marital assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew it then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was no point pretending he had been na\u00efve.<\/p>\n<p>But this was bigger than Connor\u2019s greed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat accounts?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA private management vehicle Hale recommended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar Advisory Holdings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth typed it.<\/p>\n<p>He waited.<\/p>\n<p>Typed again.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar was dissolved eight months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the divorce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Noah was born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owned it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth scanned the registry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA shell company in Delaware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeneficial owner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor muttered something under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you still have the paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginals?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not touch them before we photograph everything in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor looked irritated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if this becomes a criminal matter, I don\u2019t want anyone alleging documents were altered after discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Criminal.<\/p>\n<p>The word landed differently than divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Different from infidelity.<\/p>\n<p>Different from paternity.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you really think Victor was stealing from us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is one possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are the others?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat he was hiding assets for Connor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout stealing them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo create leverage. To conceal fees. To support another transaction. To cover earlier misconduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the photograph of the storage locker still displayed on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr to move my inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police had already begun trying to locate Melinda and Noah.<\/p>\n<p>Connor had provided photographs, medical information, known addresses, names of friends.<\/p>\n<p>I had listened as he described the pajamas Noah had been wearing the previous evening.<\/p>\n<p>Blue cotton.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny white clouds.<\/p>\n<p>That detail stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it mattered legally.<\/p>\n<p>Because it proved Connor had tucked him into bed.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever else Connor had done, his grief over Noah was not fabricated.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth\u2019s office received a call just before four.<\/p>\n<p>The storage locker had been identified.<\/p>\n<p>The photographs sent to me contained enough visible details for investigators to trace the facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForty minutes north.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho rented it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth listened.<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder what name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wrote something.<\/p>\n<p>Then ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelinda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron Pike?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth turned the legal pad toward me.<\/p>\n<p>The rental contract was in my name.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I thought I had misread it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKirsten Sinclair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My birth date.<\/p>\n<p>An old address.<\/p>\n<p>A copy of my driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n<p>Except I had never rented a storage locker.<\/p>\n<p>Connor stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey used your identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth picked up his phone again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling the detective back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause possession just became important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The locker contained documents belonging to me.<\/p>\n<p>If the lease was also in my name, someone could later argue the files were mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would that accomplish?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there are illegal financial records in that unit, you could be made to appear involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFraud schemes don\u2019t only require money movement. They require blame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor whispered, \u201cA fall person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>The word person was strangely offensive.<\/p>\n<p>As though years of my life could be converted into a role someone assigned me.<\/p>\n<p>At five-ten, the detective called back.<\/p>\n<p>They had entered the locker pursuant to the investigation involving Noah\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>Noah was not there.<\/p>\n<p>Neither was Melinda.<\/p>\n<p>But the boxes were real.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of pages.<\/p>\n<p>Bank documents.<\/p>\n<p>Copies of identification.<\/p>\n<p>Tax records.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance forms.<\/p>\n<p>Trust documents.<\/p>\n<p>Fertility records.<\/p>\n<p>Medical billing statements.<\/p>\n<p>And something else.<\/p>\n<p>Audio recordings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of recordings?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose voices?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey haven\u2019t reviewed everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The detective continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are digital drives labeled by year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rustle of paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeginning four years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly when the handwritten tracking sheet began.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Connor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did you start speaking to Melinda privately?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He understood the distinction.<\/p>\n<p>Not the affair.<\/p>\n<p>Privately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe three and a half years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Not like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked whether you were okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the charity gala.<\/p>\n<p>Melinda seated beside Connor.<\/p>\n<p>My late arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Her easy smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were stressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat we were having trouble getting pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something sharp behind my ribs.<\/p>\n<p>Three and a half years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Before I had told Melinda myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told her that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked why you seemed distracted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you decided my fertility belonged to a stranger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor looked ashamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was sympathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course she was.<\/p>\n<p>That was probably the first hook.<\/p>\n<p>Not seduction.<\/p>\n<p>Sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth asked, \u201cDid she ask about finances?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndirectly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe joked about how expensive fertility treatment was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Kenneth.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe asked whether insurance covered anything,\u201d Connor continued. \u201cWhether we were burning through savings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you answer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat we were fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeaning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you had family money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>The chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKirsten\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told a woman you barely knew that I had inherited money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t give her account numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave her the map.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He opened his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Then closed it.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth intervened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after that conversation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe started appearing at foundation events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid that strike you as unusual?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she volunteered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was not listed as a foundation volunteer until six months later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI checked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pieces were beginning to form.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough for a full picture.<\/p>\n<p>Enough for dread.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth held up one finger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A voicemail notification appeared.<\/p>\n<p>He connected the phone to a small speaker in his office.<\/p>\n<p>We listened.<\/p>\n<p>For three seconds, there was only breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Melinda\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKirsten.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor stood instantly.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are hearing this, then they found the locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice sounded thin.<\/p>\n<p>Not panicked.<\/p>\n<p>Controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to understand that I did not choose you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt the room tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told who you were. I was told what you had. I was told your marriage was already vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor\u2019s face went gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor said Connor would be easy to approach because he was angry about the fertility problems. He said you trusted people who seemed useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth reached for a recorder of his own.<\/p>\n<p>Melinda kept speaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron handled the money. Victor handled the accounts. I was supposed to create access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connor whispered, \u201cJesus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Melinda said the sentence that silenced all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoah was never part of the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice cracked for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was the mistake that made everything collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking you to forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking you to find Noah before Victor does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The message ended.<\/p>\n<p>Connor grabbed the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth was already dialing the detective.<\/p>\n<p>But my eyes stayed on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Because there had been one sound beneath Melinda\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Low.<\/p>\n<p>Regular.<\/p>\n<p>Metallic.<\/p>\n<p>A repeating chime.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard it before.<\/p>\n<p>Many times.<\/p>\n<p>Not in a storage facility.<\/p>\n<p>Not at Melinda\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n<p>At the old Leland building downtown.<\/p>\n<p>An elevator bell.<\/p>\n<p>Three soft notes.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then two.<\/p>\n<p>The private-floor elevator used by senior advisers.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Hale\u2019s floor.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30508\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: THE FLOOR ABOVE THE BANK<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Victor Hale had known my family longer than Connor had.
