He kept trying to undo what his father had done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t make the lies right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward the blue door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it means neither of us was abandoned in quite the way we thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I touched the weathered carving.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you meet him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is he like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched Walter&#39;s son standing beneath the porch roof.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComplicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMom, there&#39;s someone at your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My body tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know. A man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he knew Grandpa Hale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walter&#39;s father.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel continued, her voice lower now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Dad took something that belonged to his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The morning seemed to go still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe won&#39;t tell me. He keeps asking about a blue folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My eyes dropped to the folder still tucked beneath my arm.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel saw my expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I covered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone is at my house asking Rachel for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her not to give him anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell her not to let him inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I relayed the warning.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel said the man was already leaving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he give you a name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She told me.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know him?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason Walter changed the trust six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked toward the blue house, then at the folder in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father wasn&#39;t only preparing for you to learn about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he preparing for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s voice dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor someone to come looking for what his father hid.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=30503\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: THE DATE THAT WOULD NOT MOVE<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I left home before sunrise with Walter&#39;s letter in my coat pocket and the old photograph in my purse.
