almost an hour.”

The cold sensation returned beneath my ribs.

Kenneth had warned me that people living inside large lies often reacted badly when truth approached.

“What happened afterward?”

“He asked whether you'd looked surprised when he said Noah was his.”

I stared at her.

“Those exact words?”

“Yes.”

Not whether I looked hurt.

Not angry.

Not jealous.

Surprised.

The distinction mattered.

My phone rang.

Kenneth's name appeared on the screen.

Melinda saw it.

Neither of us spoke.

I answered.

“Kenneth?”

His voice was controlled, but I heard urgency beneath it.

“Kirsten, are you somewhere private?”

I looked at Melinda.

“Not exactly.”

“Then don't repeat anything I say.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“All right.”

“We obtained the specialist documentation through the appropriate process.”

My heart began beating harder.

“And?”

“The findings are more definitive than we expected.”

I closed my eyes.

Across the room, Melinda was watching me.

Kenneth continued.

“Connor's condition was diagnosed years before your divorce.”

“How serious?”

A pause.

Then:

“Serious enough that the specialist documented natural conception as extraordinarily unlikely.”

I opened my eyes.

Melinda had gone completely still.

She couldn't hear Kenneth's words, but she could read my face.

“There's more,” he said.

I turned toward the window.

“What?”

“We also confirmed that Connor signed the report acknowledging he understood the diagnosis.”

My throat tightened.

He had known.

Not suspected.

Known.

Every accusation returned at once.

Every appointment.

Every apology.

Every night I had blamed myself.

Connor had watched me carry guilt that belonged to a lie he had deliberately maintained.

“Kirsten?”

“I heard you.”

“We need to meet tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Because the financial case and the medical timeline may now overlap with another legal matter.”

I looked toward Melinda.

She stood slowly.

“What other matter?”

“I can't explain by phone until I've reviewed the filing.”

“What filing?”

Kenneth inhaled.

“A paternity action.”

The room seemed to tilt.

I lowered the phone.

Melinda's face had turned white.

“What did he say?” she whispered.

I could not tell her.

Not yet.

Kenneth was still speaking.

“Kirsten, don't contact Connor tonight.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“And if Melinda contacts you—”

I looked directly at her.

“She already has.”

Silence.

Then Kenneth said, very carefully, “In that case, say nothing else until tomorrow.”

The line went dead a few moments later.

Melinda stood across from me, one hand gripping the back of her chair.

“What is happening?”

I slipped the phone into my bag.

“I think you need to call that lawyer.”

“Kirsten.”

“Tonight.”

Her breathing became shallow.

“Is this about Noah?”

I said nothing.

That was enough.

She grabbed the card from the table.

Her untouched coffee tipped when her sleeve caught it, spreading across the wood.

Neither of us moved to stop it.

Outside, headlights slid through the rain-darkened street.

Inside, the story Connor had built around his perfect new family had developed its first visible fracture.

And somewhere in a legal filing I had not yet seen, another man was asking a question that could break it open completely.

Click
