Looks like personal papers. Pharmacy shifts. might hate some of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard did.<\/p>\n<p>Very much.<\/p>\n<p>That was the point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria pulled the notebook back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI complained you treated coming home like a hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that to my face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI complained you cared more about the truck than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat might have been true in certain weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote that sometimes I wished you\u2019d find another woman so I\u2019d have a clean reason to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard felt that.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria watched him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWant me to stop?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never actually wanted you to now.<\/p>\n<p>People preferred singular causes.<\/p>\n<p>One betrayal.<\/p>\n<p>One villain.<\/p>\n<p>One date.<\/p>\n<p>One event.<\/p>\n<p>Reality often eroded quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote that you were not cruel enough for me to hate comfortably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is brutal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt proved restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I thought staying proved commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt mostly proved we stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They sat quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, a child laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The sound came through the open kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria found a photograph tucked between pages.<\/p>\n<p>Celia.<\/p>\n<p>Healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Standing beside Calvin at a church picnic.<\/p>\n<p>Dale in the background carrying a cooler.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard was there too.<\/p>\n<p>Half turned away.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone alive.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone before the worst choices.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria touched Celia\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to think if I could go back, I\u2019d warn her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk more questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019d hate that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t sign anything for anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would I tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard thought about the younger man in the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Thicker hair.<\/p>\n<p>Harder posture.<\/p>\n<p>Certain money solved things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo home more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen before fixing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t tell your wife the house is yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you tell yourself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet a full-time job sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sentence was not accusation.<\/p>\n<p>It was recognition.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I stay, actually stay. Don\u2019t spend ten years emotionally leaving before packing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>They closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>No need to read everything.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered too.<\/p>\n<p>Not every hidden thought needed excavation.<\/p>\n<p>Some privacy could remain privacy without becoming deception.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah came back inside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind anything important?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria looked toward Leonard.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the blue notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hannah smiled politely, unsure what that meant.<\/p>\n<p>They carried the box outside.<\/p>\n<p>At the driveway, Leonard stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The garage door had been replaced.<\/p>\n<p>The old camera was gone.<\/p>\n<p>The side window where he had once watched Gloria write at 2:13 had new curtains.<\/p>\n<p>He felt no desire to check inside.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She placed the box into her car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoffee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just had coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t good coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They drove separately to the diner.<\/p>\n<p>Same booth.<\/p>\n<p>The waitress had retired, replaced by a young man who called Leonard sir too often.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria ordered pie.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou always eat mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ordered two.<\/p>\n<p>They sat facing each other.<\/p>\n<p>Not married.<\/p>\n<p>Not enemies.<\/p>\n<p>Not restored.<\/p>\n<p>Something more honest and less defined.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria said, \u201cDale might be eligible for a transfer closer to here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll visit?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She accepted it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaria thinks you should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaria thinks many things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe survived being kidnapped. She has earned opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Lake Ridge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca says civil issues may finish this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou selling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve become impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ate pie.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked through the window.<\/p>\n<p>A truck pulled into the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Not his.<\/p>\n<p>For years, roads had been escape because movement prevented him from sitting still long enough to examine anything.<\/p>\n<p>Now he found he could sit.<\/p>\n<p>That might have been the biggest change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you miss me?\u201d Gloria asked.<\/p>\n<p>The question came without warning.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Missing did not mean mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Missing did not mean return.<\/p>\n<p>Missing was simply another truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you ever wish we stayed married?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard thought carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe neither.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer hurt.<\/p>\n<p>And relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Both could live in the same sentence.<\/p>\n<p>She reached for her coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think happened to us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked at the blue notebook beside her purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe kept confusing possession with care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney. Time. Decisions.
