too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither tried to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>The trial resumed the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard\u2019s name appeared on the witness list.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine met him outside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone keeps saying that when I say no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause fear improves cautious witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked through the courtroom doors.<\/p>\n<p>Martin sat at the defense table.<\/p>\n<p>For months Leonard had imagined confronting him.<\/p>\n<p>Now the confrontation would happen through questions he did not control.<\/p>\n<p>That was probably better.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine touched the file in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the answer hurts your image but it is true, give it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had spent years surviving because people feared what truth would cost them.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard walked toward the witness stand.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever it cost him now, he was done paying for lies.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a
