Ask yourself why.<\/p>\n<p>To Rebecca:<\/p>\n<p>Your father took money from Everett and Martin both.<\/p>\n<p>To Maria:<\/p>\n<p>Gloria knew the notebook was false before she asked you to listen.<\/p>\n<p>To Leonard:<\/p>\n<p>Your father knew Gloria signed North Creek papers before Celia died.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard stared at his.<\/p>\n<p>Perfectly designed.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough plausibility.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough history.<\/p>\n<p>Just enough poison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens if we never found these before delivery?\u201d Gloria asked.<\/p>\n<p>Reed answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably a lot of unnecessary phone calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s final machinery was not financial.<\/p>\n<p>It was relational.<\/p>\n<p>Even in custody, he intended to keep everyone suspicious of everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria said, \u201cCan the messages be canceled?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine was already working on it.<\/p>\n<p>Most could.<\/p>\n<p>One had been scheduled through a second service.<\/p>\n<p>Recipient:<\/p>\n<p>Dale.<\/p>\n<p>Delivery:<\/p>\n<p>2:13 p.m. that day.<\/p>\n<p>They stopped it before release.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can\u2019t help himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even his contingency messages carried the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Repetition had become ego.<\/p>\n<p>Ego had become evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Reed looked at Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked about a second recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said not to assume.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChecking is not assuming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fair.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence inventory from Martin\u2019s seized storage units contained several audio devices.<\/p>\n<p>Most had been reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>One damaged recorder had not yet yielded usable data.<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine asked for time.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard and Gloria left Anna\u2019s office separately.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the sky was clear.<\/p>\n<p>They stood on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>Divorced.<\/p>\n<p>The word felt strange.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria looked at her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo scheduled messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard almost said going home.<\/p>\n<p>But the house was listed for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Soon it would not be home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then held out her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think divorced people can shake hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems formal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just signed thirty pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-eight years condensed into one ordinary gesture.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand felt exactly the same.<\/p>\n<p>That was difficult.<\/p>\n<p>She released him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodbye, Leonard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoodbye, Gloria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They walked in opposite directions.<\/p>\n<p>At 1:48 p.m., Jasmine called Leonard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe damaged recorder had recoverable audio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard stopped beside his truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCelia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA second recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Martin had told the truth about one thing.<\/p>\n<p>That made the message more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Gloria should hear it first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard almost objected.<\/p>\n<p>Then didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thirty minutes later they were back at the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>Divorce certificate not yet filed.<\/p>\n<p>Marriage effectively over.<\/p>\n<p>Still drawn into one more room.<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine placed headphones on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can listen together if Gloria agrees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gloria nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The recording began.<\/p>\n<p>Celia\u2019s voice sounded weaker than in the first.<\/p>\n<p>This recording came later.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly hours before her death.<\/p>\n<p>She spoke slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Long pauses.<\/p>\n<p>At first nothing surprising.<\/p>\n<p>She said she had hidden documents.<\/p>\n<p>She said Calvin had made serious mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>She said Dale was in deeper than he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>Gloria signed the trustee acknowledgment tonight. She doesn\u2019t understand it. I let her sign because I am running out of time.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Celia continued.<\/p>\n<p>If this becomes her burden, that is my fault.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked at Gloria.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s message claimed Everett knew Gloria signed North Creek papers before Celia died.<\/p>\n<p>But this was not evidence Gloria knowingly participated.<\/p>\n<p>It was Celia admitting she had placed responsibility on Gloria without adequate explanation.<\/p>\n<p>The recording went on.<\/p>\n<p>I told Calvin he has to tell Leonard about Lake Ridge if Everett won\u2019t. Leonard will be angry. Let him. Anger passes. Secrets grow.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard felt the sentence deep inside him.<\/p>\n<p>Celia understood too late.<\/p>\n<p>Like everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the final passage.<\/p>\n<p>If Gloria ever leaves Leonard, do not let Dale turn that into his business. Their marriage belongs to them. Leonard has hurt her. She has hurt him.
