20 – A Red Folder Hidden Inside Leonard’s House Contained Gloria’s Forged Signature and a Document That Could Still Hand Martin Control

Reed refused to let Leonard search the house alone.

By seven that evening, two deputies were inside.

Leonard stood in the driveway with Natalie.

Gloria remained at the secure hotel.

The feed-shed tube had been recovered.

Inside were Everett’s original letter, Stonebridge documents, copies of altered business statements, and a handwritten instruction sheet in Martin’s writing.

Enough, Reed believed, to dramatically strengthen the case.

But Martin remained missing.

And the red folder remained somewhere inside Leonard’s house.

“What does ‘last door’ mean?” Leonard asked Natalie.

“I don’t know.”

“You’re supposed to know things.”

“I know enough not to pretend.”

“That’s becoming irritatingly fashionable.”

The search began in the office.

Nothing.

Garage.

Nothing.

Bedroom.

Nothing.

Kitchen cabinets.

Attic.

Basement.

Nothing.

Leonard became impatient.

“If Martin hid something here, he’d put it somewhere I wouldn’t disturb.”

Reed looked at him.

“Where don’t you disturb?”

“Gloria’s things.”

The answer came immediately.

Everyone turned toward the bedroom.

Half of Gloria’s belongings were gone.

But some remained.

Sewing basket.

Old books.

Photograph boxes.

A cedar chest her mother had given her.

Leonard pointed.

“That.”

The chest sat at the foot of the bed.

Gloria had owned it before they married.

Leonard had almost never opened it.

A deputy photographed the exterior.

The chest was unlocked.

Inside were blankets, wedding photographs, letters, and a removable cedar tray.

Beneath the tray was nothing unusual.

Leonard frowned.

“Check the lining.”

The deputy pressed along the sides.

One panel shifted.

Behind it was a red folder.

Leonard felt his stomach drop.

Martin had chosen perfectly.

A place Leonard considered Gloria’s.

A place his own rigid ideas about ownership made him unlikely to search.

The folder went directly into evidence.

Nobody read it casually.

Reed photographed each page before removing anything.

The first document was a property-management authorization.

Gloria Harlan’s name appeared at the bottom.

Signature.

Not hers.

The closed G again.

The second document authorized Stonebridge Fiduciary Services to act as emergency manager for North Creek-related assets under specified conditions.

The third was worse.

It appeared to be a sworn statement from Gloria alleging Leonard had concealed trust assets, mixed business and trust funds, and threatened to move property beyond legal reach.

Leonard stared.

“She never signed this.”

Natalie pointed.

“It’s notarized.”

Reed leaned closer.

The notary name was unfamiliar.

Jasmine searched it.

The commission number belonged to a real notary.

But the named notary had died eight months earlier.

Leonard almost laughed.

“Of course.”

Reed looked at him.

“What?”

“Everybody in this thing is dead.”

Nobody smiled.

The forged statement was dated for the following week.

Not yet used.

Prepared.

Waiting.

Leonard understood the phrase.

Last door.

If the protection order failed, if the pills failed, if the altered business statements failed, Martin could still produce a sworn allegation supposedly from Gloria.

But now Gloria was cooperating.

Would the document matter?

Natalie answered.

“If filed before challenged, it could create temporary chaos.”

“Enough for Stonebridge?”

“Maybe enough to petition.”

“How quickly?”

“Fast, if Martin claimed assets were at risk.”

Leonard looked toward Reed.

“Then he hasn’t given up.”

“No.”

“He needs to file this.”

“Or a copy.”

“He has copies.”

“Assume he does.”

Leonard walked toward the bedroom window.

“What stops him?”

Natalie answered.

“We do.”

“How?”

“Gloria executes a sworn declaration immediately stating she never signed or authorized these documents.”

“Then Martin’s copy becomes useless.”

“Not useless. But much harder to rely upon.”

Leonard nodded.

“Do it.”

Natalie looked at him.

“It’s Gloria’s decision.”

Leonard stopped.

Old habit.

Again.

“Right.”

He called Gloria.

He explained.

Then waited.

Gloria asked Anna several questions.

Finally she said, “I’ll sign the real statement.”

Leonard almost said good.

Instead he said, “Okay.”

An hour later Gloria’s declaration was executed in the presence of her attorney and a verified notary.

She identified the forged signature.

Denied accusing Leonard of moving trust assets.

Confirmed she had been manipulated into creating false notebook entries.

Acknowledged the genuine problems in their marriage.

And stated clearly that those problems did not make the fabricated events true.

Leonard read a copy.

The section about their marriage hurt.

She described financial control.

Emotional withdrawal.

His use of silence.

His repeated statements that the house was his.

None of it was flattering.

None of it was false.

Natalie watched him finish.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Want to challenge anything?”

“No.”

“That’s progress.”

“Stop grading me.”

She almost smiled.

The declaration was immediately distributed to relevant attorneys, the trust administrator, and law enforcement.

Rebecca Caldwell formally rejected Stonebridge as any substitute fiduciary.

Lake Ridge’s title was flagged against unauthorized transfer.

The bank froze unusual North Creek transactions pending review.

For the first time, Martin’s paths were closing faster than he could create new ones.

At 10:18 p.m., Reed received confirmation.

A warrant had been issued for Martin on multiple suspected offenses connected to unlawful electronic monitoring, document forgery, and financial fraud.

Dale remained under guard at the hospital and would face his own charges after release.

Leonard expected relief.

Instead he felt tired.

“So that’s it?”

Reed shook his head.

“Not until we find Martin.”

The words had barely left his mouth when Jasmine called.

She had recovered data from Martin’s second phone.

One recent search involved Lake Ridge.

Another involved Leonard’s home address.

A third involved the county recorder’s office.

Then she found a draft email.

Recipient field blank.

Subject: Emergency Petition.

Attachments listed:

Gloria declaration.

Leonard financial exhibits.

Stonebridge acceptance.

“He prepared to file electronically,” Natalie said.

“Can he still?”

“Not successfully with Gloria’s real declaration already circulated.”

Leonard looked toward Reed.

“So he knows he lost.”

“Soon.”

“What does a man like Martin do when he knows?”

Reed did not answer.

Leonard’s phone rang.

Gloria.

He answered immediately.

“What?”

“Maria’s gone.”

Leonard stood.

“What do you mean gone?”

“She was supposed to come to the hotel after getting clothes.”

“When?”

“Two hours ago.”

“Did you call?”

“Her phone is off.”

Leonard looked at Reed.

He could hear Gloria’s fear.

“Stay where you are.”

“I am.”

“Tell hotel security.”

“They know.”

Leonard covered the phone.

“Maria’s missing.”

Reed was already moving.

“Address?”

“You know it.”

“I mean where was she last seen?”

Gloria answered through the phone.

“At her house.”

Reed called dispatch.

A deputy was sent immediately.

Leonard felt guilt arrive before facts.

Maria had been pulled into this because Gloria used her as a witness.

Then because Maria chose to help.

Then because she found Dale’s paper.

She had become part of the evidence chain without ever asking to.

The deputy reached Maria’s house at 10:34.

Front door unlocked.

No sign of forced entry.

Her purse remained inside.

Car gone.

Leonard said, “Maybe she drove somewhere.”

Reed nodded.

“Maybe.”

At 10:42, a traffic camera located Maria’s car heading north.

Toward Lake Ridge.

Leonard stared at the map.

“Why would she go there?”

Nobody knew.

Another camera captured the car sixteen minutes later.

The image was blurry.

Two people appeared inside.

Maria was in the passenger seat.

A man drove.

Jasmine enhanced what she could.

Not enough for facial identification.

But enough to show the driver’s dark jacket.

Leonard remembered Martin on his porch.

Reed called state police.

Road units moved toward Lake Ridge.

Leonard reached for his truck keys.

Reed said, “No.”

“Maria is there because of us.”

“No.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

Leonard looked at him.

“Martin knows the property better than your deputies.”

“So?”

“My father took me there every summer.”

“Leonard.”

“There’s an old service road from the south.”

Reed stopped.

“Where?”

“Not on the county map.”

That changed things.

Leonard showed him.

The road had once served timber crews.

Most of it was overgrown.

But a truck could still pass in dry weather.

Reed considered.

“You ride with me.”

Leonard nodded.

“No heroics.”

“I know.”

“Say it.”

“No heroics.”

They left.

The drive took thirty-eight minutes.

Leonard sat beside Reed watching darkness sweep past.

Gloria called once.

“Did they find her?”

“Not yet.”

“You’re going there.”

It was not a question.

“Yes.”

“Leonard.”

“I’m with Reed.”

She exhaled.

“Come back.”

The words surprised him.

He looked through the windshield.

“For the divorce?”

Gloria gave a broken laugh.

“For whatever comes next.”

Leonard swallowed.

“I’ll try.”

“Don’t say try.”

He almost told her not to tell him what to do.

Instead he said, “I’ll come back.”

They reached the old service road at 11:27.

Two state vehicles waited without lights.

Leonard guided them past a collapsed gate and through trees.

The Lake Ridge parcel opened ahead.

Moonlight touched the field.

A vehicle sat near the abandoned survey cabin.

Maria’s car.

Reed stopped.

“Stay here.”

Leonard nodded.

Officers moved forward.

Thirty seconds.

One minute.

Then shouting.

A light flashed inside the cabin.

Someone ran from the rear.

Reed swore and exited.

Leonard stayed.

Every instinct screamed to follow.

He gripped the dashboard.

No heroics.

A gunshot cracked through the trees.

Leonard ducked automatically.

Another shout.

Then silence.

His heart hammered.

The passenger door opened suddenly.

Maria climbed inside.

Leonard stared.

Her hands were bound loosely in front of her.

“Drive,” she gasped.

Leonard reached toward the bindings.

“Maria—”

“Drive!”

A figure appeared behind the cabin.

Martin.

He was running directly toward them.

Leonard looked at the ignition.

Keys still there.

He could start the vehicle.

He could move.

He could protect Maria.

Or he could remain exactly where Reed had ordered him while an armed man approached.

For once, obedience and safety were no longer the same thing.

Leonard turned the key.

The engine came alive.

Martin raised his arm.

Leonard put the vehicle into gear.

And as the headlights swung across Martin’s face, Leonard saw something in his other hand.

Not a weapon.

A red folder.

Another one.

Martin had kept a second set.

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: Leonard Drove
